Rock snaps 10-game losing streak with win over Bellarmine, 3-1

Freshman Gabrielle Malishchak recorded a goal and an assist in the 3-1 win over Bellarmine on Saturday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 3-1 win Saturday night against Bellarmine College of Kentucky.

The win was The Rock's third of the season and gives this year's squad the most wins since 2003 season. 

The Rock is now 3-16 overall as it prepares for its final game of the season Tuesday at Mansfield (4 p.m.).

Freshman Ariana White gave The Rock an early 1-0 lead Saturday night when she scored her third goal of the season in the second minute of action.

Bellarmine (8-9) evened the score at 1-1 in the 17th minute with a goal by Cassi Dalrymple.

The score remained 1-1 until the fith minute of the second half, when freshman Gabrielle Malishchak scored her fourth goal of the season to give The Rock a 2-1 lead. 

Malishchak came close to scoring her second goal of the game in the 54th minute, but her shot was deflected by the Bellarmine goalie. Rock junior Samantha Badaczewski quickly gathered in the rebound and put a shot in goal to make it a 3-1 game.

Junior Lisa Belcastro recorded five saves in the game, all of which came in the first half. 

The Rock recorded 18 shots on goal, with Malishchak recording seven shots with four on goal. Badaczewski recorded five shots on goal, and White added three.
