SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University football team will open the 2026 season Thursday night with a 6 p.m. "White Out" game against No. 12 University of Minnesota Duluth at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
Below you will find all pertinent information regarding tickets, parking, tailgating and live coverage, along with complete game notes. SRU does not print physical copies of game programs any longer. Thursday is the 19th annual "White Out" game. Fans are encouraged to wear white to the game. The SGA Bookstore has official shirts on sale all week for $6 (S-XL) or $9 (2XL+) at the bookstore on campus. A limited supply of shirts will also be on sale at the SGA Bookstore stand at the game.

PARKING CHANGES FOR THIS GAME ONLY
Because SRU has classes on campus Thursday and will not move resident cars from the stadium parking areas, parking will be different than normal operations for this game only. A temporary parking area on the grass between the soccer field and baseball stadium will be opened for prepaid tailgating. There were only 135 total spaces available in that lot and they are already sold out. A limited number of first-come spaces will be available in the parking area above the stadium behind the visiting sideline for $10. That lot will open at 3 p.m. with access from Harmony Road. All other parking for the opener will be first-come free parking in campus lots. Regular parking operations will return for the remainder of the season.
 
TAILGATING
• Tailgating is allowed in paid lots three hours before kickoff for this game (lots open at 3 p.m.)
• No Tailgating at halftime

STUDENT GATE PROCEDURES
Students should still bring their valid ID to enter the game through the student gate, but will also need to use the CORE application on their cell phones. Login to your CORE account to access the event QR code that will be scanned at the gate. Only CURRENT students will be allowed to enter through the student gate. To speed up entry into the game, students should add the event in advance and be prepared to scan their code at the entry gate.
 
NEW BEER GARDEN WILL BE OPEN
Slippery Rock will partner with the North Country Brewing Company to operate a beer garden inside the stadium this year for home SRU football games. The beer garden will be located on the runoff of the track opposite the scoreboard end of the stadium. All patrons must be 21+ to enter the beer garden and all alcoholic beverages must be purchased and consumed in the beer garden. Sales will begin when stadium gates open at 4:30 p.m. and conclude at the kickoff of the third quarter.

THE GAME
Annual Division II contenders Slippery Rock and Minnesota Duluth will meet for the first time ever Thursday night in a "Week Zero" game to kick off the 2026 season.
 
FIRST-EVER MEETING WITH MINNESOTA DULUTH
This will mark the first-ever meeting between Slippery Rock and Minnesota Duluth in what is a two-year home-and-home agreement between the schools. Slippery Rock will return the trip and fly to Minnesota next fall to open the 2027 season with a Week Zero game. This will mark just the second time Slippery Rock has even faced a team from the state of Minnesota with the only other meeting coming against national runner-up Minnesota State in the 2019 NCAA Division II Semifinals. The Mavericks won that game 58-15 in a frigid, snowy game at SRU. This marks the second straight year SRU is opening the season against a team it has never played after visiting Franklin Pierce in 2025.
 
COACHING MATCHUP
Slippery Rock head coach Shawn Lutz is in his 31st overall year at The Rock and his 11th year (10th season) as head coach, where he owns an 88-25 record with nine straight winning seasons, five PSAC West titles and six trips to the NCAA playoffs. Lutz was the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019 and 2023 and was the Don Hansen Football Gazette Division II National Coach of the Year in 2019. The 88 wins are the most among all PSAC West head coaches since the 2016 season. Lutz was an assistant at SRU for 20 years before taking over the program in 2016. He has been a member of the coaching staff for 13 of SRU's 20 PSAC West titles. Lutz played tight end at West Virginia University, graduating in 1996, and earned a master's degree in sport management from SRU in 2003.
 
Curt Wiese is in his 14th year and 13th season as head coach at Minnesota Duluth, where he has racked up an overall record of 114-29 for an impressive .797 winning percentage. Wiese has led the program to a winning record in all 12 seasons with the Bulldogs and has never had a season with less than seven wins or more than four losses. He has led the team to five seasons with 10 or more wins and six trips to the NCAA Division II Playoffs. Wiese earned his bachelor's degree from Minnesota State Mankato in 2000 after playing quarterback at both Mankato and Wisconsin-Stevens Point.  
 
NATIONAL RANKINGS
Slippery Rock is receiving votes in the AFCA Division II national poll and is ranked No. 25 in the D2football.com poll. Minnesota Duluth is No. 12 in the AFCA poll and No. 20 in the D2football.com poll. Both national polls are available on page nine of the PDF notes linked above.
 
MINNESOTA DULUTH QUICK HITS
• The Bulldogs are coming off a 10-2 overall record in 2025 that included a trip to the NCAA Division II Playoffs and a division title in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
• UMD has put together 17 straight winning seasons entering this year, one more than SRU's 16 straight winning seasons. The Bulldogs are tied for the sixth longest active winning seasons streak in the nation, while SRU is tied for the ninth longest streak.
• Curt Wiese is 114-29 as head coach at UMD and has never had a losing season.
• UMD enters the game No. 12 in the AFCA poll and No. 20 in the D2football.com poll. The Bulldogs finished No. 16 in the final AFCA poll last fall.
• UMD was picked to finish second overall in the NSIC this year behind Minnesota State Mankato. The Bulldogs were picked to win the North Division title
• Two players were named to the D2football.com Elite 100 Watchlist with defensive back Preston McQueen earning first team honors and offensive lineman Carter Geerts earning second team honors. McQueen tallied 30 tackles, two interceptions and one pass breakup last fall.
• UMD ranked 12th in Division II last year in scoring, averaging 37.5 points per game. The Bulldogs averaged 417.4 total yards of offense per game with 201.0 rushing yards and 216.4 passing yards per game. They allowed 20.8 points per game and allowed 343.7 yards of offense per game, including 122.1 rushing yards and 221.6 passing yards per game.
• UMD lost its top passer and rusher in QB Kyle Walljasper, who threw for 2,328 yards and ran for 876 yards last year. Jacob Eggert is expected to take over at QB after appearing in seven games last year and throwing for 207 yards and two TD on 29 attempts.
• UMD also lost its top receiver in tight end Like Dehnicke, who was an All-American as a freshman after catching 61 passes for 1,119 yards before transferring out. The top returning pass catcher is Ben Fritsch, who caught 14 passes for 198 yards.
• Safety Joey Krouse returns as the leading tackler for UMD last year with 55 tackles and 5.0 TFL, while corner Preston McQueen is likely to be among the best cover corners SRU will see all year. DE Mark Rendl returns to lead the defensive line after racking up 8.5 TFL and 4.0 sacks last fall.
• Drew Henson returns to give UMD a strong kicker. Henson averaged 40.2 yards per punt and made 5-of-8 field goals last year with a long of 52 yards.
 
SRU GETTING VOTES IN THE AFCA POLL
Slippery Rock slipped out of the top 25 in the AFCA Division II poll after a week 10 loss at Bloomsburg last year, but finished the year still getting votes in the final poll. The Rock find themselves also receiving votes to open this year, keeping SRU's streak of being at least mentioned in every AFCA national poll released since the 2018 season, a streak of more than 2,870 days.
 
FIRST-EVER "WEEK ZERO" GAME
This will mark the first time Slippery Rock has taken advantage of the rule change a few years back that allowed Division II schools to play "week zero" games one week prior to the traditional start of the regular season. SRU will play this week and then have 16 days before returning to action Sept. 12 on the road at East Stroudsburg.
 
16 STRAIGHT SEASON OPENING WINS
Slippery Rock is looking to lock up a season-opening win for the 17th consecutive season. The last time SRU failed to win its first game of the season was back in 2008 on the road at Seton Hill. The Rock are 7-0 on the road and 9-0 at home over the last 16 season openers.
 
19 STRAIGHT WINS IN HOME OPENERS
Slippery Rock hasn't lost its home opener since 2005, winning its first home game of the season in each of the last 19 seasons.
 
17 STRAIGHT WHITE OUT WINS
This week's game will serve as the 19th Annual "White Out" game for The Rock football team. The tradition, launched during the 2007 season, asks fans to wear white to one night game each fall. Official shirts are sold by the SGA Bookstore for just $6. The Rock have won 17 straight White Out games with the only loss in the White Out game coming in the inaugural event, a 34-31 defeat to Indiana (Pa.) in 2007.
 
WINNING SEASONS STREAK
Slippery Rock has put together a winning season in each of the last 16 years, which ranks ninth among all Division II programs for the longest active winning seasons streak in the country. The only other program in the PSAC with more consecutive winning seasons currently is California (Pa.), which has strung together 21 winning seasons entering 2026.
 
HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Rock football teams have compiled a 199-71 (.737) record in 51 seasons at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium (formerly known as N. Kerr Thompson Stadium). The Rock own a 99-26 (.792) home record since artificial turf was installed in the summer of 2003 and are 95-20 (.826) in home games since 2005. The numbers get even better in recent years, as The Rock are 77-11 (.875) at home since the beginning of the 2010 season and 65-8 (.890) since the beginning of the 2013 season.
 
ONE WIN AWAY FROM 200 AT M-T STADIUM
Slippery Rock is 199-71 at home since Mihalik-Thompson Stadium opened during the 1974 season. The Rock will lock up their 200th win in the facility with one more win this fall.
 
AUGUST GAMES
Slippery Rock will open the season in the month of August for the first time since 2012 (52-6 win over Seton Hill August 30) and just the 10th time in program history. The Rock have won each of their last two August games in 2012 and 2009 (31-27 vs. Bowie State) and have won their last three home August games dating back to 2007 (W, 51-24 vs. Seton Hill). SRU has lost at home just once in August, a 20-17 loss to nationally ranked Bloomsburg in 2004. Overall, The Rock are 3-6 in August games with three of those losses at FCS Youngstown State and five of the six losses on the road.

THURSDAY NIGHT GAMES
This will mark the first time SRU has played on a Thursday since traveling to Clarion Oct. 31, 2024. Prior to that, SRU had not played on a Thursday night since opening the 2021 season on the road at Wayne State. The Rock have played just five Thursday games since 2010 and have won all five with wins over Clarion in 2024, Wayne State in 2021 and 2019, Seton Hill in 2012 and Merrimack in 2010. The last time SRU lost a Thursday night game was a week seven loss at Clarion Oct. 8, 2009, which was SRU's only loss against a Division II opponent on a Thursday over the last 20 seasons (8-1 on Thursdays during that stretch).
 
FIVE NIGHT GAMES ON THE SCHEDULE
Slippery Rock will play five games start at 4 p.m. or later this fall, including four that start at 6 p.m. or later. Four of those will be home games (Aug. 27, Oct. 3, Oct. 10, Nov. 7) and one will be on the road (Sept. 12). SRU had a streak of 37 straight night game wins snapped with a loss to California (Pa.) last year, but maintains and incredible record when the lights are on. The Rock are 37-1 in their last 38 games that started at 4 p.m. or later and have not lost a road night game since 2009. SRU is 48-10 all-time at home since lights were installed at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium in 2003.
 
CAPTAINS NAMED
After voting by the players, SRU named six captains for the 2026 season with three on offense and three on defense. The offensive captains include running back JayJay Jordan, quarterback Brad Hoffman and tight end Vincent Berardi. The defensive captains include defensive end Brian Young Jr. and linebackers Jacob Snow and Teddy Gregory Jr.
 
ROCK PICKED SECOND IN THE PSAC WEST PRESEASON POLL
SRU earned three first place votes and came in second in this year's PSAC West Preseason Coaches Poll. Indiana (Pa.) was picked first with the other five first place votes. California (Pa.) was picked third, followed by Edinboro, Clarion, Seton Hill, Lock Haven and Gannon.
 
CHANGES IN THE PSAC
The PSAC looks a little different beginning this fall with the addition of provisional member Lackawanna College (Scranton, Pennsylvania). Lackawanna will apply for Division II status during the year after making the move from a two-year school to a four-year institution. The Falcons will play full PSAC schedules this year to help facilitate that process, but the games will not count in the PSAC standings and will not count for NCAA playoff consideration. The addition of Lackawanna to the Eastern Division schedule also moves Lock Haven back to the Western Division, giving the division a full eight team football divisional schedule for the first time since 2023 before the departure of Mercyhurst.
 
TOUGH STRETCH TO BEGIN SEASON
Slippery Rock will not play a home game in the month of September. The Rock open the year at home against Duluth Aug. 27 and then will play three straight road games in September, including two overnight trips. SRU visits East Stroudsburg, which was picked second in the PSAC East, for a 6:30 p.m. night game Sept. 12 and then turns around the next week and travels to Millersville for a noon game Sept. 19. The Rock then open the PSAC West schedule on the road at perennial power California (Pa.) Sept. 26.
 
HOME FOR FIVE OF SEVEN
The opening road swing means that SRU will play five of its last seven regular season games at home between Oct. 3 and Nov. 14. The only road trips in that stretch will be visits to rival Indiana (Pa.) Oct. 17 and a trip to Clarion Oct. 31. SRU will host Gannon Oct. 3, Seton Hill Oct. 10, Lock Haven Oct. 24, Edinboro Nov. 7 and Lackawanna (or the PSAC title game) Nov. 14.
 
NEW COACHES
Slippery Rock welcomed one new face to the full-time staff this offseason with the addition of defensive backs coach LaTraviaus Kingsland, who joined the staff after working in Australia with the Geelong Buccaneers last year. SRU also added a number of familiar faces to the staff this offseason, with Cory Dinger moving from a GA role to a full-time spot as linebackers coach and co-special teams coordinator. Former SRU All-American defensive tackles Munchie Johnson and John Sabo Sr. will coach the defensive line and former SRU student intern Cooper Boozel will serve as a graduate assistant on the defensive side.
 
ROSTER MAKEUP
Slippery Rock brings back 47 letterwinners from 2025, including 28 on offense,18 on defense and one on special team. Of those 47 returners, 13 are returning starters that made at least four starts last year. SRU returns six offensive starters and seven defensive starters. The majority of the roster are newcomers with most of that group being incoming freshmen.
 
NO MORE REDSHIRTS
The NCAA Division II passed new eligibility rules Aug. 5 that will grant Division II athletes five years of eligibility from the start of their college careers or their 19th birthday, whichever comes first. That means there will be no more redshirts in college football. Last year, true freshmen could play in three games without using a season of eligibility. This year, there is no reason to have to sit freshmen, meaning many more first-year players are likely to get playing opportunities throughout the year. The SRU roster also looks a lot different as class years were all updated to remove the term "redshirt." Athletes listed as "seniors" likely still have one more season of eligibility, while players listed as "5th" are now in their final season of eligibility, pending any waivers.
 
JORDAN HEADLINES RETURNERS
Running back JayJay Jordan is back to lead the group of returning starters. Jordan, who was the PSAC West Offensive Athlete of the Year and an All-America honoree last season, was among the top five Division II players in the country in most rushing and all-purpose categories in 2025. He ran for 1,375 yards and racked up 14 total touchdowns in just 10 games a season ago. Jordan is expected to get the lion's share of carries this year. He will be joined in the backfield by returners Luke McCoy and Eryck Moore-Watkins, along with Allegheny transfer Dominic Berarducci.
 
JORDAN NAMED TO D2FOOTBALL ELITE 100 WATCHLIST
SRU running back JayJay Jordan was one of four total running backs in the nation to be named to first or second team honors on the D2football.com Elite 100 Watchlist, which replaced the preseason All-America team.
 
ALL-PURPOSE MAN
JayJay Jordan is coming off a breakout season last fall where he racked up 1,858 all-purpose yards in just 10 games. That total is the third most in a single-season in SRU program history and ranked him No. 2 in Division II last year in terms of all-purpose yards per game. Jordan will enter the opener with plans of returning both kickoffs and punts as SRU looks to maximize his touches this fall.
 
ALLSTATE AFCA GOOD WORKS NOMINEE
In addition to his standout play, JayJay Jordan was also the SRU nominee for this year's Allstate AFCA Good Works Team thanks to his commitment to service off the field. Jordan is active in numerous charitable and community service projects, which include traveling to Puerto Rico to help recovery from hurricanes and numerous projects that serve both the SRU community and his hometown community of Reading, Pennsylvania. Jordan is one of 175 total nominees for this year's Good Works Team, which will be announced in mid-September.
 
QB ROOM
Slippery Rock returns starting QB DaOne Owens, who made eight starts as a redshirt freshman last year to become the first freshman to start that many games at SRU in more than a decade. Owens threw for 1,682 yards with 14 TD and five INT while rushing for 302 yards and seven TD. He will be pushed by returner Brad Hoffman, who had a stellar spring and offseason. Hoffman has been developing in the SRU system over the last two seasons and looks ready to earn playing time in 2026. The QB room also includes last year's backup QB David Bahm, Frostburg State transfer Tanner Pfeuffer and returner Ben Moore, along with true freshman Jeff Thompson III.
 
TIGHT END GROUP IS STRONG
Slippery Rock returns three tight ends that earned starts last year, including starter Carson Heckathorn, who was injured after the fourth week of the season and missed most of the year. He was among the top pass catchers on the squad before the injury. That paved the way for Vincent Berardi and Lou Swartz to earn starts. Both men are back this year to give SRU a deep and talented tight end room that also includes Holy Cross transfer George Bousum and returner Tyler Heckathorn.
 
DEEP RECEIVING ROOM
Slippery Rock welcomes back Northwestern graduate Reggie Fleurima, who missed most of last year with an injury. Fleurima is joined by John Sabo, the top returning pass catcher from a year ago with 387 yards and four TD. SRU also welcomes back returners Ethan Trettel and Telly Palmer in the slot and outside targets Brandon Ross, Nathaniel McKnight III and Hamilton Gates. The room added transfer slot receiver Jahmil Perryman from St. Francis (Pa.) and transfer outside receiver Jabril Carter from Fordham, along with three-star high school recruit JuJu Johnson from Farrell High School.
 
OFFENSIVE LINE
The biggest question mark for the offense will be the offensive line, which returns just one starter from a year ago. Consensus All-American left tackle Joe Cooper, who started every game the last three years, is now playing for the Edmonton Elks in the Canadian Football League. Luke Caldwell is the only returning starter on the offensive line after starting every game last year at right tackle. The unit also welcomes back right tackle Jake Jonassen, who was expected to start last year but missed the entire season with an injury. Center Mohamed Aly returns after getting snaps a year ago, as does Varrius Farrell, who saw playing time as a true freshman last fall. The unit will also see former tight end Christian Werling moving to the offensive line after Werling bulked up in the offseason to make the move. The other player most likely to earn a start at guard is Brian Frasco, who transferred in last year from Saint Francis.
 
DEFENSIVE LINE BOLSTERS DEFENSE
SRU returns its entire defensive line from a year ago and gets a boost from the return of former starter Daniel Tooson, who missed the entire 2024 and 2025 seasons with injuries. Tooson will join former All-PSAC end Brett Kwoka and All-PSAC tackle Trever Valenti, along with returning ends Brian Young Jr., Elijah Halley and Jett Franz and tackle Nick Frisco to give SRU a deep defensive line that should be able to rotate multiple players with experience throughout the year.
 
LINEBACKERS LED BY CAPTAINS
Both primary starters in The Rock's 4-2-5 setup are back this year with All-PSAC honorees Jacob Snow and Teddy Gregory returning to the lineup. Both have struggled with injuries in recent years, including Snow, who only played 3.5 games last fall. If they can stay healthy, they represent one of the top 1-2 linebacker combos in the region. They are joined by returner Tyree Johnson, who missed the 2025 season with an injury, along with sophomores Spencer Barninger, John Frangos and Troy Lucas, who all saw snaps as true freshmen last year. 
 
SECONDARY UNIT SEES SHAKEUP
The secondary will be the only unit on the defense with new starters this year. The group returns safety Ben Lane, who racked up 40 tackles last year and can play in multiple positions across the unit, along with safeties Carmen Metcalfe and Kwalil Shepperson, who combined for 43 tackles last fall, and Evan Harper, who played in all 10 games. SRU welcomed three transfer defensive backs expected to make an impact, including Michael Cornick III from Wilkes, Shyne Kalilikane-McMoore from Moorpark College and Owen Suah from Delaware Valley, along with two true freshmen that could start in Jonah Brown and Aaron Scales Jr.
 
SPECIAL TEAMS GETS NEW LEGS
Slippery Rock lost its kicker, punter and holder from last season and will roll out a new unit of specialists in 2026. Wittenberg transfer kicker Connor Macek is expected to be the punter in week one, while sophomore Billy Lech will handle the kicking. Longsnapper Joey Reed is back, while Lucas Benson is likely to handle the shortsnapping. The Rock have a plethora of athletes to experiment with in the return game, but expect to see the dynamic All-American running back JayJay Jordan and the small speedster Telly Palmer getting first touches.
 
STARTERS NOTES
Entering this season, Slippery Rock has 23 total players that have started at least one game at The Rock, including nine players that have started at least 10 games. Trever Valenti leads all players on the team with 23 starts and has the longest active streak on the team with 23 straight starts. Daniel Tooson, who missed all of the 2024 and 2025 seasons, is the only other player with more than 20 starts on the roster (21). Just five players on the roster this year started in all 10 games last year - RB JayJay Jordan, WR John Sabo, OL Luke Caldwell, DT Trever Valenti and DT Nick Frisco.

While many conferences in Division II have gone to a pay-per-view model in 2026, the PSAC and Slippery Rock will continue to offer fans free viewing of all PSAC mandated contests. All 11 Slippery Rock regular season football games will be available for free viewing on the Rock Athletics Digital Network and the PSAC Sports Digital Network. Games can be accessed on any web browser on any phone, tablet or computer and can also be accessed with any Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV or Android TV streaming devices. Simply visit the app stores on those devices and search for "Rock Athletics Digital Network" to download the application for free to enjoy live Rock football games on your connected TV. THE ROCK STATION TO CARRY ALL GAMES
Slippery Rock will continue its partnership with The Rock Station, 97.7 FM, with Bob Cupp and Glenn Thompson returning to call the action for all home and away games in 2026 over the FM station in Butler County. The coverage area for the radio broadcasts will also expand to Beaver County this year with Beaver County Radio 1250 AM / 99.3 FM also carrying all 11 games. Each live audio broadcast will be available for free online at 977rocks.com and over the air on 97.7 FM in Butler County and 99.3 FM in Beaver County. Each game will include a 15-20 minute pregame show with an interview with head coach Shawn Lutz.

UP NEXT
Slippery Rock will be off next weekend during the traditional opening week of the season. The Rock will return to action Sept. 12 on the road at East Stroudsburg.
