COACHING MATCHUP
Slippery Rock head coach Shawn Lutz is in his 31st overall year at The Rock and his 11th year (10th season) as head coach, where he owns a 94-25 record with 10 straight winning seasons, five PSAC West titles and six trips to the NCAA playoffs. Lutz was the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019 and 2023 and was the Don Hansen Football Gazette Division II National Coach of the Year in 2019. The 94 wins are the most among all PSAC West head coaches since the 2016 season. Lutz was an assistant at SRU for 20 years before taking over the program in 2016. He has been a member of the coaching staff for 13 of SRU's 20 PSAC West titles. Lutz played tight end at West Virginia University, graduating in 1996, and earned a master's degree from SRU in 2003.

Paul Tortorella got his education from his employer's biggest rival, graduating with a physical education degree from Slippery Rock in 1985. He never played football at The Rock. Tortorella, like Lutz, was a longtime assistant coach before taking over the reins of the program in 2017. He spent 22 seasons as an assistant, serving as the defensive coordinator from 1995-2016. Now in his 10th year (ninth season), Tortorella owns a 73-24 record as head coach and has led IUP to four trips to the NCAA Playoffs (2017, 2019. 2022, 2025).

NATIONAL RANKINGS
Slippery Rock moved up one spot to No. 7 in the AFCA Division II national poll and No. 8 in the D2football.com poll this week. Indiana dropped nine spots to No. 19 in the AFCA and 10 spots to No. 23 in the D2football.com polls. Both national polls are available on page nine of the PDF notes linked above.

BACK ON THE ROAD
Slippery Rock returns to the road for the fourth time this season after previously playing three straight road games in September. The Rock were home in each of the last two weeks and are an even 3-0 both on the road and at home this year. SRU is outscoring opponents 170-71 in its three road games and has scored at least 41 points in all three road games this year.

11 UNBEATENS LEFT
Slippery Rock enters this week as one of just 11 teams left in Division II without a loss. Two of those 11 teams are in the PSAC, with Eastern Division leader Kutztown also owning a 6-0 record.

ALREADY LOCKED UP A WINNING SEASON
Slippery Rock is already guaranteed to finish with a winning season this fall, extending its current streak of winning seasons to 17 straight years.  The Rock entered this year ranked ninth among all Division II programs for the longest active winning seasons streak in the country. The only other program in the PSAC with more consecutive winning seasons currently is California (Pa.), which has strung together 21 winning seasons entering 2026.

LUTZ UP TO 12TH ON PSAC WINS LIST
SRU head coach Shawn Lutz won his 94th game at The Rock last week, which is No. 12 on the all-time PSAC head football coaching wins ledger. Lutz is three wins shy of moving up to No. 11 and eight wins shy of cracking the PSAC all-time top 10 wins list, which includes just 10 other men to ever record 100 wins in the conference.

BACK IN THE TOP 10
Slippery Rock is ranked inside the top 10 for the seventh straight year and the 10th time in the last 11 seasons.

STREAKING IN THE POLLS

SCORING ON CONSECUTIVE DRIVES
Slippery Rock has scored points on six or more consecutive drives in four different games this year. SRU scored points on seven straight drives in the win at East Stroudsburg before taking a knee to end the game. The Rock then scored touchdowns on 10 straight drives against Millersville. SRU put together three straight TD drives to end both halves at Cal and then strung together six straight touchdown drives against Gannon. Last week against Seton Hill, SRU scored on seven straight drives with six touchdowns and one field goal, scoring on every possession in the second and third quarters.

NO. 1 OFFENSE IN THE NATION
Slippery Rock enters this week ranked No. 1 in Division II in scoring offense (53.8 points per game), total offense (558.3 yards per game) and fewest turnovers (2). HIGHEST SCORING OFFENSE IN D1 OR D2
Slippery Rock enters this week with the No.1 scoring offense at the NCAA Division I or II level, including all teams in the FBS, FCS and Division II. The only NCAA teams from any level currently scoring more points per game than SRU are two Division III teams: Lake Forest (63.3 ppg) and Saint John's (55.4 ppg). There are only seven NCAA football teams across all four levels that average more than 50 points per game entering this week. Grand Valley State (52.3 ppg) is the only other Division II team.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES
Slippery Rock has scored 323 points through six games this year after scoring just 327 total points in 10 games last season.

ANOTHER CLEAN GAME
Slippery Rock did not turn the ball over last week against Seton Hill to mark the fifth time in six games this year that SRU has not turned the ball over. 700 YARDS TWICE THIS YEAR
Slippery Rock put up 723 yards of offense last week against Seton Hill, one week after the Griffins pitched a shutout and held Cal (Pa.) to 22 total yards. That marked the second time this season SRU has put up more than 700 yards of offense in a game after also going for 703 against Millersville.

RUSHING RECORD
Slippery Rock ran for a single-game program record of 458 yards last week, which topped the previous record of 456 that was set at East Stroudsburg in 2014. The Rock had four players record rushes of at least 60 yards in the game, including JayJay Jordan (71), DaOne Owens (63), Luke McCoy (66) and Jabril Carter (60). TWO OVER 100 ON THE GROUND

JAYJAY TOP SCORER IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL
RB JayJay Jordan enters this week ranked No. 1 in the NCAA in both rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns among all players across all four divisions (FBS, FCS, DII, DIII) with his 16 rushing TD and 18 total TD. JORDAN AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS
JayJay Jordan enters this week with 835 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns with averages of 8.5 yards per carry and 139.2 yards per game. He ranks fourth in the nation in all-purpose yards (176.7 ypg), fourth in yards per carry (8.5) and sixth in rushing yards (835) and rushing yards per game (139.2 ypg) in addition to ranking No. 1 rushing TD, total TD and total points.

OWENS LEADING THE OFFENSE
QB DaOne Owens has made a significant leap in performance from his redshirt freshman season last year and has commanded the SRU offense to an historic start. Owens is completing 67.3 percent of his passes for 1,428 yards with 16 TD and two INT. He has also rushed for 351 yards and three touchdowns and is averaging 9.8 yards per carry and 58.5 rushing yards per game on the ground. Owens has at least one run of 50+ yards in three of the last four games.

THREE-HEADED MONSTER
Slippery Rock has three players averaging at least 8.5 yards per carry on the ground. Luke McCoy has just 17 carries on the year, but has made them count in limited action when spelling JayJay Jordan. McCoy has 217 yards and four TD, averaging 12.8 yards per carry. Jordan averages 8.5 yards per carry and QB DaOne Owens is averaging 9.8 yards per carry. Those three have combined for 1,403 rushing yards and 23 TD while averaging 9.3 yards per carry on 151 carries combined.

TE Vincent Berardi grabbed two TD catches last week and now leads all SRU receivers with 24 catches for 302 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 12.6 yards per catch and 50.3 yards per game.

SPREAD IT OUT

A total of 13 different players have caught passes for SRU this year with five players having double digit catches and 10 players having multiple grabs on the year. Vincent Berardi (24 rec.-302 yds.-5 TD), John Sabo (20-265-5), Ethan Trettel (17-277-2), Hamilton Gates (15-318-3), JayJay Jordan (14-154-2) and Reggie Fleurima (8-103-0) all have at least 100 receiving yards on the year. The Rock have 11 different players averaging more than 10.0 yards per catch.

SINGLE-GAME STREAKS
John Sabo has now caught at least one pass in 15 straight games. JayJay Jordan has at least one touchdown in 12 straight games.

TWO SACKS ALLOWED IN SIX GAMES
SRU ranks fourth nationally in fewest sacks allowed per game (0.33) after allowing just two sacks through six games and only one sack with the starters on the field. The Rock also rank 10th nationally in fewest tackles for loss allowed per game at 3.33.

NOT BAD FOR AN O-LINE WITH LIMITED EXPERIENCE
Slippery Rock rolled out an entirely new starting offensive line in the opener. The combined total of starts at SRU for all five players on the line was just three and all three of those belonged to center Mohamed Aly, who has since missed five straight weeks with an injury. Right tackle Jake Jonassen, right guard Christian Werling, left guard Brian Frasco and left tackle Varrius Farrell all made their first start at SRU in the opener and center Soren Stoltzfus made his first start at ESU in week two. That unit continues to improve weekly and has powered an SRU offense that ranks in the top 20 nationally in nearly every offensive category.

TACKLES SPREAD OUT ACROSS DEFENSE
Slippery Rock has not relied on one standout defensive player this year and is getting contributions up and down the defense. The Rock have 17 different players with double digit tackles on the year and 10 players between 20 and 34 total stops on the year. Teddy Gregory Jr. leads the group with 34 tackles and 2.5 TFL. Brian Young Jr. (29 tackles, 4.0 TFL, 2.5 sacks), Jacob Snow (27 tackles, 2.5 TFL), Ben Lane (25 tackles, 1.0 TFL) and Tyree Johnson (25 tackles, 1.5 TL) all have at least 25 tackles.

BALL HAWKS
The Rock secondary have come up with six of the team's seven INT and two of the three fumble recoveries. Evan Harper has two picks, Carmen Metcalfe has one INT and one fumble recovery, Aaron Scales Jr. has a 65-yard fumble return TD and Michael Cornick III, Kwalil Shepperson and JuJu Johnson each have one INT.

FRESHMEN MAKING PLAYS IN SECONDARY
DB Aaron Scales Jr. has started all six games this season to be the only true freshman to start every game. Scales is sixth on the team in total tackles with 24 to go along with 4.5 TFL, two QB hurries, two pass breakups and a 65-yard fumble return touchdown. CB Jonah Brown led the defense last week with six tackles and 2.0 TFL.

YOUNG LEADING DEFENSIVE LINE
DE Brian Young Jr. is second on the team in total tackles with 29 stops, including 4.0 TFL and team-highs of 2.5 sacks and four QB hurries. Jordan is active in numerous charitable and community service projects, which included traveling to Puerto Rico to help recovery from hurricanes and numerous projects that serve both the SRU community and his hometown community of Reading, Pennsylvania. Jordan is one of only three players from Division II to be named to this year's team and is one of just 11 non-FBS players from all levels to be honored. He will be recognized on the field at the Allstate Sugar Bowl and CFP National Semifinal Jan. 15 at the Superdome in New Orleans.
