COACHING MATCHUP
Slippery Rock head coach Shawn Lutz is in his 30th overall year at The Rock and his 10th year (ninth season) as head coach, where he owns an 85-21 record with nine straight winning seasons, five PSAC West titles and six trips to the NCAA playoffs. Lutz was the PSAC West Coach of the Year in 2018, 2019 and 2023 and was the Don Hansen Football Gazette Division II National Coach of the Year in 2019. The 85 wins are the most among all PSAC head coaches since the 2016 season. Lutz was an assistant at SRU for 20 years before taking over the program in 2016. He has been a member of the coaching staff for 13 of SRU's 20 PSAC West titles. Lutz played tight end at WVU, graduating in 1996, and earned a master's degree in sport management from Slippery Rock in 2003.

Gary Dunn is in his 10th year (ninth season) as the head coach at his Alma Mater, where he owns an impressive 69-24 record. Dunn, who played for the Vulcans from 1991-94 before embarking on his coaching career, has led Cal to a winning record in every year he has been head coach with NCAA Playoff appearances in 2017, 2018 and 2024. He led the Vulcans to the 2024 PSAC West title. Prior to returning to Cal, he spent six seasons as the offensive coordinator at Duquesne and 11 years as an assistant at Morehead State.

NATIONAL RANKINGS
Slippery Rock stayed put at No. 4 in this week's AFCA Division II national rankings and No. 9 in the D2football.com rankings. Cal is No. 8 in the AFCA poll and No. 16 in the media poll. Both polls are on page nine of the PDF notes linked above.

FOUR NIGHT GAMES TO OPEN SEASON
This week will mark the fourth of four straight 6 p.m. kickoffs in the month of September, including a road game to open the year and three straight home games in weeks 2-4.

WE LOVE NIGHT GAMES
The Rock have won their last 37 consecutive games that started at 4 p.m. or later and have not lost a night game at home or on the road since Sept. 29, 2012. SRU has won its last eight road night games and has not lost a night game on the road since Sept. 19, 2009. The Rock are 37-1 at home in night games since 2010 and have won 29 straight home night games since 2012. SRU is 48-9 all-time in home night games since lights were installed at Mihalik-Thompson stadium in 2003.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE
Rock football teams have compiled a 197-70 (.738) record in 51 seasons at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium (formerly known as N. Kerr Thompson Stadium). The Rock own a 97-25 (.795) home record since artificial turf was installed in the summer of 2003 and are 93-19 (.830) in home games since 2005. The numbers get even better in recent years, as The Rock are 75-10 (.882) at home since the beginning of the 2010 season and 63-7 (.900) since the beginning of the 2013 season.

CLOSING IN ON 200 WINS AT MIHALIK-THOMPSON
Slippery Rock enters this week with an all-time record of 197-70 at Mihalik-Thomspon Stadium, which opened in 1974 as N. Kerr Thompson Stadium and is currently in its 51st season hosting SRU home games. The Rock need three more wins to reach 200 career victories in the stadium.

2-0 IN EARLY SEASON PSAC CROSSOVERS
Slippery Rock has won its last 13 early season crossover games against PSAC East opponents, a streak that dates back to week two of the 2018 season when SRU lost 25-21 at Shippensburg. That loss at Shippensburg in 2018 is the only time SRU has lost an early season PSAC crossover to an East Division team since 2012. The Rock are 24-1 since the beginning of 2013 against the PSAC East in the early season crossover games.

STAPLES IN THE NATIONAL POLL
Slippery Rock has appeared in every weekly national poll released by the American Football Coaches Association since the final rankings of the 2018 season, a streak that stretches more than six full years. The Rock opened the 2025 season ranked No. 4 in the national poll and have remained there in each of the first four weekly polls.

PSAC WEST OPENER

Slippery Rock has won its last eight straight PSAC West season openers and is 8-0 in the first PSAC West game of the year under head coach Shawn Lutz. The most recent loss in the divisional opener came back in 2015 at Seton Hill. The Rock ran the table after that game, won the PSAC West and overall PSAC titles and went to the national quarterfinals.

PSAC WEST DOMINANCE
Slippery Rock has lost just three PSAC Western Division games since Oct. 21, 2017 and is 40-3 against the Division since then, including 38-3 in the last six full seasons with five PSAC West titles over that stretch. The Rock have won or at least shared nine of the 13 PSAC West titles dating back to 2011, easily leading all programs in the Division. SRU head coach Shawn Lutz is 43-5 against the PSAC West in the last seven seasons and 46-9 against the Division in his career as head coach.

PSAC WEST PRESEASON POLL
The Rock were picked to finish first in the PSAC West in the PSAC preseason coaches poll entering this fall, while defending champion California was picked to finish third in the division, behind Indiana (Pa.) in second.

ONLY ONE REGULAR SEASON LOSS SINCE 2022
Slippery Rock has only lost once in the regular season since 2022 and that loss came on the road at California (Pa.) in week seven last fall. The Rock are 22-1 in the regular season since the beginning of the 2023 season with the only losses in 2023 coming in the PSAC championship game and the NCAA quarterfinals and the only other loss in 2024 coming in the national semifinals.

BOUNCED BACK FROM THAT ONE LOSS
Slippery Rock bounced back from the regular season loss to Cal last year by winning out the rest of the regular season, knocking off PSAC champion and undefeated No. 1 seed Kutztown in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs and then avenging the loss to Cal with a 31-13 win on the Vulcans' home field in the NCAA quarterfinals.

ONLY RANKED GAME IN DIVISION II THIS WEEK
All eyes will be on the PSAC West Saturday night as this game is the only Division II game in the country this week that features two nationally ranked opponents, let alone two undefeated top 10 ranked opponents.

10 STRAIGHT HOME GAMES FOR CAL
This week will mark the first road game for California (Pa.) in what is essentially the length of entire regular season. The Vulcans have played 10 straight games at home, including seven straight to end the 2024 season and three straight to open the 2025 season. That streak included four NCAA Playoff games and the PSAC title game. Cal has actually played two games against SRU since the last time the Vulcans played a road game, Oct. 12, 2024 at Seton Hill.

LAST WEEK FOR THE ROCK
Slippery Rock improved to 3-0 on the year with a 42-0 win over Shippensburg. The Rock defense forced six turnovers, came up with six sacks and 11 tackles for loss. The offense scored points on five straight possessions after Joe White opened the scoring with a 73-yard punt return touchdown. DaOne Owens tossed four touchdown passes in his first collegiate start to lead SRU to its first shutout win since 2022.

LAST WEEK FOR CALIFORNIA
Cal also cruised to a comfortable win last week with a 42-6 home win over Lock Haven to improve to 3-0 on the year. The Vulcan defense held Lock Haven under 300 yards of offense and came up with two interceptions and four sacks. Bobbie Boyd Jr. ran for 73 yards and two touchdowns and Tavin Willis returned an interception 63 yards for a score. Roman Purcell threw for 140 yards and two TD and Phaeton Hill threw for 25 yards and one score.

PAIR OF WEEKLY HONORS
Slippery Rock took home two PSAC West Athlete of the Week awards this week with Kanye Thompson earning the defensive honor and Joe White earning the special teams award. Thompson picked up his first career football weekly award to go along with two previous PSAC Track Athlete of the Week awards for his prowess as the fastest 100-meter runner in PSAC history. He led the defense with eight tackles, one tackle for loss, one pass breakup and two forced fumbles last week. White earned his first career PSAC award for his 73-yard punt return TD.

HOME TEAMS ALL WIN IN WEEK THREE
Every PSAC team that was home last week picked up a win in the final week of the early season crossovers and every home team in the league scored at least 34 points last week.

ROCK DEFENSE PITCHES SHUTOUT
Slippery Rock's defense posted its first shutout since 2022 last week in the 42-0 win over Shippensburg. It marked the first time an SRU team earned a shutout win since a 31-0 win over Clarion Oct. 29, 2022. That's the fourth shutout for an SRU defense in the last six seasons and the fifth shutout for SRU since 2015 (75-0 vs. Millersville in 2015, 49-0 vs. Millersville in 2019, 75-0 vs. Clarion in 2021, 31-0 vs. Clarion in 2022, 42-0 vs. Shippensburg in 2025).

THOMPSON STEPPING UP IN SECONDARY
CB Kanye Thompson has 18 tackles in the last two weeks and has forced three fumbles this season, which leads all players in Division II. Thompson was an All-American on the track last spring and broke the all-time SRU and PSAC records in the 100-meter dash when he ran 10.1 seconds. A rare dual-sport athlete, he now ranks second on the SRU defense with 25 tackles this fall.

2ND IN NATION IN SACKS PER GAME
Slippery Rock enters this week ranked first in the PSAC and second in Division II in sacks per game, averaging more than 4.6 sacks per game. The Rock tallied a season-high six sacks last week to go along with 11 tackles for loss and nine QB hurries and now have 14 sacks in three games.

LINEBACKERS MAKING PLAYS
Teddy Gregory Jr. leads the SRU defense with 27 tackles and picked up his first career interception last week, which he returned 51 yards. Jacob Snow has 15 stops and leads the team with 4.0 tackles for loss to go along with 2.5 sacks. The starting LB duo has combined for 42 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, one interception, one forced fumble and four pass breakups.

TAKEAWAYS
Slippery Rock turned the ball over four times against Shepherd in week two and came up with no takeaways on defense. The Rock flipped that script last week with the defense coming up with six turnovers, including three interceptions and three fumbles. The three picks marked the first interceptions on the season with Teddy Gregory Jr., Tyler Cain and Michael Dahn all grabbing one pick. Kanye Thompson forced two fumbles and Trever Valenti, Elijah Halley and Brian Young Jr. recovered fumbles.

DEFENSIVE LINE COMES UP BIG
The Rock defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage against Shippensburg last week and enter this week leading the defense to a total of 20 tackles for loss and 14 sacks on the year. Trever Valenti leads that group with 19 tackles and 1.5 TFL to go along with Nick Frisco (11 tackles, 1.5 TFL), Brett Kwoka (11 tackles, 0.5 TFL), Mehki Twillie (9 tackles), Brian Young Jr. (8 tackles, 3.5 TFL) and Elijah Halley (5 tackles, 2.5 TFL).

DaONE GETS IT DONE IN FIRST START
Redshirt freshman QB DaOne Owens became the first Slippery Rock freshman or redshirt freshman to start a game at QB since Augustus Necastro late in the 2016 season. Owens became the first freshman QB to win a start at Slippery Rock since Ryan O'Rourke won his first career start against Lock Haven in 2009. Owens also led SRU to a comeback win against Shepherd in week two after entering the game in the fourth quarter and leading three touchdown drives in the final five minutes of regulation and overtime. In two games, Owens is 21-of-35 for 308 passing yards with four TD and no interceptions while also rushing for 62 yards and one touchdown on nine carries.

WHO IS THIS KID?
DaOne Owens was one of the best quarterback prospects in the state of Ohio coming out of the vaunted Massillon Washington program, where he led the Tigers to a state title in 2023. A dual-threat lefty, Owens redshirted his freshman year at Slippery Rock with Harlon Hill finalist Brayden Long leading the offense in 2024. He began this season as the backup behind veteran transfer and team captain Anthony Vespo, who started the first two games but did not dress last week with an injury. Owens is set to make his second straight start this week.

SPREADING IT OUT
Owens connected with eight different receivers in his debut last week and completed five passes that went for 25 yards or longer. He hit John Sabo for 28 yards and one TD, Reggie Fleurima for 66 yards and one TD, Latrell Sutton for 61 yards and a score, Xander McClure for 25 yards and one score and Joe White for 40 yards.

FIRST CAREER TDS AT THE ROCK
Receivers John Sabo and Reggie Fleurima both caught their first career TD passes last week, while Owens threw his first career passing TD and Joe White had his first punt return TD.

FIRST PUNT RETURN TD SINCE 2021
Joe White's 73-yard punt return TD last week was the first punt return TD by an SRU player since Jermaine Wynn Jr. against Clarion in 2021.

SUTTON FINDS PAYDIRT AGAIN
WR Latrell Sutton has scored a touchdown in the passing game in each of the first three games this season and enters this week leading SRU with 170 receiving yards and three touchdowns on just seven catches. His 24.3 yards per catch average ranks fourth in the PSAC.

JORDAN HAS BEEN ELECTRIC
While the attention was on the freshman QB last week, junior RB JayJay Jordan quietly went about his business racking up more than 100 all-purpose yards for the third straight game this season. He topped 100 yards on the ground for the second time in three weeks with 102 rushing yards and now has 326 rushing yards and three TD on the season. Jordan is averaging a whopping 8.0 yards per carry and ranks second in the PSAC at 108.7 rushing yards per game. With 75 receiving yards and 49 kick return yards, Jordan leads all SRU players with 450 all-purpose yards (150.0 per game).

WILDCAT WRINKLE IN THE OFFENSE
Slippery Rock deployed former QB Demeatric Crenshaw in the wildcat formation last week and Crenshaw rushed in for a one-yard touchdown. He made the move to the tight end position this year and has played in all three games both as a tight end and as a wildcat QB. Crenshaw was the Missouri Valley Football Conference Freshman of the Year while playing 10 games at QB for Youngstown State in 2022.

WINS WHEN RUSHING FOR 100+
Slippery Rock won every game in 2024 when it rushed for more than 100 yards as a team and continued that trend in the first three weeks of 2025. The Rock have now won 13 straight games when they reach at least 100 rushing yards as a team.

ROBERTS HAS BEEN SOLID IN KICKING GAME
PK Kevin Roberts entered week one as the backup kicker, but moved into the starting role with an injury to freshman Billy Lech leading up to the opener. Roberts has performed well to keep the starting job, going 14-for-14 on PAT kicks and 1-for-2 on field goal attempts. He is also serving as the punter, where he is averaging 37.1 yards per punt. Roberts has made 78 career PAT kicks, which ranks 11th all-time at SRU.

OFFENSE HITS 40 POINTS
Slippery Rock went 17 straight games without scoring 40 points before breaking the 40-point mark with a 42-0 win last week, ending a streak that stretched back to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2023.

STARTERS NOTES
Entering this season, Slippery Rock returned only 15 players that had ever started a game at The Rock, including just five players with at least 10 career starts and six total players that started the 2024 national semifinal game at Ferris State. Joe Cooper leads all players on the team with 31 starts, while Daniel Tooson leads the defense with 21 starts. Cooper has the longest active streak on the team at 31 straight starts, followed by Luke Pugliese and Michael Henwood with 17 straight starts.

13 PLAYERS MAKE FIRST STARTS AT SRU
Slippery Rock had a total of 10 players make their first SRU start in the opener against Franklin Pierce, including seven on offense and three on defense. The players to make their first SRU start in the opener were QB Anthony Vespo, RB JayJay Jordan, WR John Sabo, WR Latrell Sutton, OL Eli Podgorski, OL Matthew Prudhomme and OL Luke Caldwell on the offense and DT Nick Frisco, DB Joshua Hayes and DB Michael Dahn on the defense. Game two saw DL Brett Kwoka and OL Mohamed Aly make their first starts at SRU, while game three saw QB DaOne Owens make his first career start.

CAPTAINS
Slippery Rock has named four captains for the 2025 season with the team voting for two offensive players and two defensive players to serve as captains. The offensive captains are quarterback Anthony Vespo and offensive tackle Joe Cooper, while the defensive captains will be safety Michael Henwood and linebacker Jacob Snow.

COOPER NAMED TO EAST-WEST SHRINE BOWL WATCHLIST
SRU left tackle Joe Cooper picked up a high honor entering this fall when he was named as one of just 10 players in Division II on the East-West Shrine Bowl Watchlist. Cooper, at 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, has already received visits from multiple NFL teams.

COOPER AND KWOKA ON D2 ELITE 100 LIST
Slippery Rock landed two players on the D2football.com Elite 100 list entering this season with left tackle Joe Cooper and defensive lineman Brett Kwoka both being recognized.

WINNING SEASONS STREAK
Slippery Rock has put together a winning season in each of the last 15 years, which ranks ninth among all Division II programs for the longest active winning seasons streak in the country. The only other program in the PSAC with more consecutive winning seasons currently is California (Pa.), which has strung together 20 winning seasons entering 2025.

PLAYOFF STAPLES
Slippery Rock has reached the NCAA Division II Playoffs in each of the last six seasons and has made a playoff appearance in nine of the last 11 seasons. The Rock reached the NCAA quarterfinals in 2018, made the national semifinals in 2019, reached the first round in 2021, made the second round in 2022, reached the quarterfinals in 2023 and made the semifinals again in 2024. Slippery Rock's current streak of six straight trips to the playoffs is the second-longest active streak among all Division II programs, trailing only Ferris State (10) for the longest active playoff streak.

HOME-AND-HOME SERIES WITH MINNESOTA DULUTH
Slippery Rock announced this week that it will open the 2026 and 2027 seasons with week zero games against the University of Minnesota Duluth, pitting two Division II powers against each other. The Bulldogs have put together 16 straight winning seasons entering this fall and are two-time national champions (2008, 2010). Duluth will travel to SRU to open the 2026 season and The Rock will head to Minnesota to open the 2027 season.

UP NEXT
