LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University Athletics Department finished second by a tenth of a point in the 2024-25 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Dixon Trophy standings, marking a fourth straight year with a top three showing for The Rock.
Â
The Dixon Trophy is awarded annually to one of the 17 Athletics Departments in the PSAC that has the highest average finish in league-sponsored championships. Each team in each sport is awarded a point value between one and 17 based on its finish in league championships with 17 points going to each sport's champion. Those point totals are then averaged to provide a final score for each Athletics Department.
Â
Slippery Rock, which was third in the standings entering the spring, made up more than three full points from the winter standings after a strong showing from its spring sports, but fell just one-tenth of a point shy of repeating as Dixon Trophy champions. Gannon, which used a boost from its women's golf team picking up a title this spring, edged SRU to claim its third Dixon Trophy in the last four years. The Golden Knights finished with an average score of 12.34 points with Slippery Rock taking second with an average of 12.24 points. East Stroudsburg was third with 12.07 points as the only other department that averaged more than 10.53 points. Indiana (Pa.) was fourth at 10.53 points and West Chester rounded out the top five at 10.48 points.
Â
Slippery Rock won three PSAC overall titles in 2024-25 with the women's cross country and track & field program sweeping all three seasons. The Rock also earned runner-up finishes in women's tennis and women's lacrosse and scored at least 13 points in 12 of the University's 17 total sports. Â
Â
The women's cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field teams all scored 17 points, while the women's tennis team grabbed 16 points and the women's lacrosse and softball teams each scored 15 points. The Rock's football, men's indoor track & field, men's outdoor track & field and women's soccer team all earned 14 points, while men's soccer and men's cross country each garnered 13 points. SRU also got double-digit points from baseball, which earned 10.5 points.
Â
Slippery Rock's 10 women's team averaged 12.10 points to lead all programs in the PSAC as the only department to average above 12.0 points in the women's sports. East Stroudsburg was second among women's teams with an average of 11.96 points. The Rock's men's teams averaged 12.43 points to rank second only to Gannon's 13.13 points.
Â
Slippery Rock has now finished in the top three in the final Dixon Trophy standings in each of the last four years. The Rock have never finished lower than eighth in the final standings since the award's inception in 1995 and have now finished in the top three eight times and in the top five 18 times in the 28 years the trophy has been handed out. SRU has claimed the title on two occasions, once in 2007-08 when only the top 12 scores were counted and again in 2023-24 when all sports were counted.
