SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's track & field team completed a year-long sweep of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championships by winning the outdoor title Saturday on the final day of the PSAC Championships hosted by SRU at the William Lennox Track.
Â
The Rock capped a perfect year in the PSAC after winning the cross country title in the fall, the indoor track & field title in the winter and the outdoor track & field title in the spring. Slippery Rock led by just 12 points going into the final day of competition before exploding for 117 points Saturday to run away with the 18th title in program history with 171 points.
Â
Millersville was a distant second with 97 points. California (Pa.) took third with 82 points, followed by East Stroudsburg in fourth with 70 points and defending champion Shippensburg in fifth with 69 points. A total of 14 teams tallied points at the meet.
Â
Slippery Rock took home two of the four individual awards handed out Saturday with
Anna Igims being named the Most Outstanding Track Athlete and the Overall MVP after tallying more points than any other male or female athletes this weekend. Igims completed an undefeated PSAC year to close her storied career by winning three titles this week. She took the 3,000-meter steeplechase crown Friday and then won the double Saturday with the 1,500-meter title and the 5,000-meter title to finish with 30 points by herself.
Â
The Rock swept all four distance races with Igims winning three and
Ruthie Hughes winning the 10,000-meter run. Hughes also took second behind Igims in a 1-2 finish in the 5,000m Saturday.
Jennifer Cichra also scored in the 1,500-meter run as The Rock's distance runners combined for 60 points.
Â
Slippery Rock picked up five titles Saturday to go along with three other titles over the first two days to finish with eight event wins out of the 21 total events.
Â
Sarah Corrie earned her third PSAC title in the shot put and she did it in emphatic fashion by tossing a career-best and NCAA provisional throw of 14.73 meters. That effort moves her up to No. 16 among all Division II throwers this year. She led a 1-2 finish for SRU as
Olivia Heckman took second to earn All-PSAC honors with a throw of 13.48 meters.
Autumn Stewart also took seventh at 12.63 meters to give SRU 20 points in the shot put.
Â
Allie Taylor continued the party when she won her first career PSAC title in the pole vault after clearing 3.77 meters. Taylor had a stellar finish to the season, posting career-bests in back-to-back weeks coming into this week on her way to winning her first title.
Â
Samantha Gilbert closed an exceptional SRU career by breaking her own program record in the 200-meter dash for the second day in a row when she took third in the finals in 24.46 seconds to earn All-PSAC honors. She also was All-PSAC in the 100-meter dash with a second place finish in 11.90 seconds.
Regan Johnson added one point with an eighth place showing in the 100m in 12.34 seconds.
Â
Gilbert and Johnson also combined with
Layne Miller and
Jianna Long to win the 4x100-meter relay title Saturday in 46.31 seconds, just missing the SRU record of 46.28 seconds. Long was also All-PSAC in the 400-meter dash with a third place finish in 56.08 seconds. Gilbert and Long then closed their day by teaming with
Annasophia Stauffer and
Lydia Reed to take third in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:53.41.
Â
Isabella Bartoletti led SRU in the javelin throw with a career-best and NCAA provisional mark of 45.17 meters, good enough for second place and an All-PSAC honor that moves her up to No. 23 in the nation.
Â
Chaley Younkin led the hurdlers with a fourth place showing in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.78 seconds and
Evabella Cox took eighth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:06.38 in her PSAC debut.
Â
Slippery Rock's points were capped by triple jumpers
Baylee Blauser and
Aleks Brozeski with Blauser finishing fifth with a leap of 11.55 meters after also winning the long jump title Friday and Brozeski finishing seventh at 11.32 meters.
Â
Saturday marked the conclusion of the season for most of the Slippery Rock roster, while those with NCAA provisional marks will now wait to find out if they are high enough on the declared entry list to be accepted to the national meet. SRU currently has three women ranked in the top 25 nationally (Igims 5th in the steeplechase, Corrie 16th in the shot put, Bartoletti 23rd in the javelin). The NCAA will announce the accepted entries for nationals Tuesday evening. The national meet is set to take place May 22-24 at Colorado State Pueblo.
