SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team moved up one spot to No. 7 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Division II national poll and moved up one place No. 12 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll when both organizations updated their rankings Monday.
Â
The latest updates to the polls come after Slippery Rock extended its current winning streak to eight games with a pair of road wins last week, 19-6 at Edinboro and 15-7 at Indiana (Pa.). The eight straight wins ties the 1983 team for the longest winning streak in program history.
Â
The Rock's 13-1 record is the second-best record in the PSAC behind No. 2 West Chester (14-0) and is the best record through 14 games in program history.
Â
No. 2 West Chester leads five PSAC teams in the IWLCA rankings this week, which are the rankings generally used by the NCAA throughout the season.
Â
The Golden Rams are the only undefeated team left in Division II at 14-0 and own the only record in the PSAC better than Slippery Rock. The Rock moved up one spot to No. 12 this week to be the second ranked team from the league. East Stroudsburg dropped one spot to No. 13, Kutztown fell three places to No. 17 and Seton Hill moved up one spot to No. 18.
Â
SRU is also the second-highest ranked team from the PSAC in the USA Lacrosse poll with West Chester ranked No. 1 and The Rock ranked No. 7. East Stroudsburg is No. 16, followed by Seton Hill at No. 18. Kutztown is not ranked in the USA Lacrosse Magazine poll, but is listed as receiving votes.
Â
The only rankings that really matter are the NCAA Regional Rankings, which will be announced in numerical order for the first time Wednesday. Those rankings, along with the automatic qualifiers from each conference tournament, will ultimately determine which six teams from each region qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Slippery Rock is set to close the regular season with a pair of crucial home games this week against the two teams in second and third in the division. No. 18 Seton Hill will visit SRU Wednesday at 4 p.m for a contest that could decide the PSAC West regular season champion. Both teams have already locked up a spot in the PSAC Tournament. An SRU win in that game would guarantee The Rock their first regular season PSAC West title and a No. 1 seed in the tournament. A Seton Hill win Wednesday would send the teams to the final game of the regular season Saturday tied for first place in the division. SRU will host Lock Haven Saturday at noon on Senior Day.
