Rock set for Florida trip

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team will play four matches over six days when it heads south for its annual Florida trip beginning 11 a.m. Sunday against Winona State.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team will play four matches over six days beginning Sunday when it heads south for its annual Florida trip.
 
THE SCHEDULE
March 9 (11 a.m.) vs. Winona State (Orlando / USTA National Campus Courts 15-20)
March 10 (6 p.m.) vs. Bryant (Orlando / USTA National Campus Courts 3-8)
March 12 (4 p.m.) at Saint Leo (Saint Leo, Florida)
March 14 (3 p.m.) at Florida Southern (Lakeland, Florida)

TEAM RECORDS
• Slippery Rock heads south with a 2-3 overall record, which includes a 1-0 mark against Division II competition. Of The Rock's three losses, all have been 4-3 decisions and two have come against Division I opponents.
 
• Winona State begins its spring trip 3-3 overall and 0-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
 
• Bryant, a Division I team competing out of the Ohio Valley Conference, is 5-4 on the year. Like Winona State, the Bulldogs' first match in Florida will be against The Rock.
 
• One of two nationally ranked teams SRU will be meeting next week, No. 34 Saint Leo has started its team portion of the season hot with six victories over the Lions' opening seven matches. Saint Leo has matches scheduled against Seton Hall, Millennia Atlantic and Mississippi College heading into its match with The Rock.
 
• After losing its first two dual matches of the year, No. 31 Florida Southern has rattled off five consecutive wins. FSU will play St. Mary's Bucknell and Jefferson prior to its March 14 match with SRU.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES
• Slippery Rock holds a 1-0 record against Winona State all-time courtesy of an 8-1 victory against the Warriors in 2010.
 
• SRU is also a perfect 2-0 against Bryant dating back to when the Bulldogs were a Division II school as Slippery Rock posted a pair of 5-1 wins in consecutive seasons in 2007 and 2008 with the 2008 match occurring in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
 
• Saint Leo bested SRU, 5-4, during the 2014 season in what was the first match featuring The Rock and Lions.
 
• This season will mark the first all-time meeting between Slippery Rock and Florida Southern.

LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock earned an impressive 6-1 Atlantic Region victory against Salem on March 1 at the Glen Creek Tennis Club (Results).
 
SCOUTING THE ROCK
• Slippery Rock has captured the doubles point in four of its five matches this season. SRU's standard doubles lineup has been stellar early on.
 
Nicole Kempton and Alissia Kivi are 3-1 out of the top flight as part of a 13-3 overall record while Tina Slovak and Amaia Balaguer Brau have played their way to a perfect 5-0 record from the second slot. From the third flight, Georgie Lancaster and Dari Sakhanova make up a capable veteran grouping that is 2-2 with two victories in their last three matches.
 
• Five of The Rock's six standard entries in singles competition head south with winning records this season.
 
• Balaguer Brau, the No. 21 singles athlete in the nation according to the ITA's latest singles rankings, headlines the group. The 2024-25 Atlantic Region Singles Champion is 11-6 overall on the year and 2-3 in first-flight competition.
 
• Just a freshman, Kivki has already moved into the second flight of The Rock's lineup. She's won three straight matches to improve her mark to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in dual matches.
 
• Kempton is a perfect 2-0 when playing out of the third flight. The pair of wins have pushed her record to 7-5 in 2024-25.
 
• Sakhanova and Slovak have alternated from the fourth and fifth flights. Sakhanova is 8-5 overall and 2-3 in dual matches while Slovak has come away victorious in four of her last six outings to vault her record to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in team competition.
 
• Lancaster snapped a personal three-match losing streak from the sixth flight with a quality 6-3, 6-0 victory in the Salem match, which lifted her record to 4-6 in the early stages of her senior season.
