LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Slippery Rock University women's tennis standout
Amaia Balaguer Brau was named the first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Athlete of the Week for the 2024-25 season, the league office announced Tuesday.
The honor is the fourth such of Balaguer Brau's Slippery Rock career. Tuesday's award was the first released by the PSAC this season. It encompassed an athlete's entire body of work to date (fall season included).
Balaguer Brau has had a great start to her junior campaign. She began the fall portion of the season by winning the ITA Atlantic Region Singles Champions to qualify for the ITA Cup where she won one match.
Balaguer Brau has also competed from the top singles flight in all four of The Rock's dual matches this year on the way to posting a 10-6 overall singles record. Of her six singles losses four have come against Division I opponents.
Across the nation, Balaguer Brau is currently ranked as the No. 7 singles athlete in Division II by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
In doubles competition, Balaguer Brau has compiled a 6-3 record including a 4-0 dual match mark with teammate
Tina Slovak.
The reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Year has been nothing short of dominant at The Rock since transferring into SRU from St. Thomas Aquinas before last season. Since joining the program, Balaguer Brau has gone 29-15 overall in singles matches and 21-13 in doubles play.
Slippery Rock returns to competition 5 p.m. Saturday with a key Atlantic Region match against Salem University at the Glen Creek Tennis Club in South Park, Pennsylvania.
