ASHLAND, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University women's track and field team broke the all-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record in the 4x100-meter relay and ran the two fastest 100-meter times in school history Saturday at the Alumni Open from Ashland University.
 
The Rock kicked the meet off with a bang when Samantha Gilbert, Regan Johnson, Layne Miller and Thai-Lin Pierce combined to break both the SRU and all-time PSAC records in the 4x100-meter relay with a runner-up finish in 46.28 seconds. The NCAA provisional time topped the former PSAC record of 46.33 seconds that was set by Shippensburg in 2023 and broke the former SRU record of 46.40 seconds that was set in 2006 by Jill Rekich, Janice Rash, Andi Rose and Vera McDaniel.
 
The record-setting performances were just getting started for that group, as all four returned in the 100-meter dash and posted at least PSAC qualifying marks. Gilbert and Johnson took third and fourth in the finals with the two fastest times in SRU history with Gilbert clocking a time of 11.71 seconds and Johnson finishing in 11.80 seconds. Those efforts were both faster than the SRU record of 11.86 seconds, which was set by Emily Horstman in 2018. Pierce took ninth in 12.17 seconds and Miller was 14th in 12.49 seconds.
 
Sarah Corrie led the way in the field by setting a new career-best and NCAA provisional mark of 14.76 meters on the way to placing second in the shot put. That effort is the best in the PSAC and ranks 17th in Division II this spring. Becca Martin was second in the unseeded section with a toss of 13.58 meters and Olivia Heckman was ninth at 12.82 meters.
 
Isabella Bartoletti also hit an NCAA provisional mark and threw a career-best of 42.69 meters to take second in the javelin.
 
Back on the track, SRU got a pair of PSAC marks in the 400-meter rash with Lydia Latimer taking fourth in 58.61 seconds and Lorna Speigle placing fifth in 59.09 seconds. They both also recorded PSAC marks in the 100-meter hurdles, where SRU had five PSAC qualifying efforts. Chalondra Clarke was fifth in 15.04 seconds in the finals after running 14.98 seconds in the prelims. Chaley Younkin was eighth in 15.00 seconds, followed by Latimer in 10th in 15.15 seconds, Speigle in 11th in 15.54 seconds and Maddy Miller in 16th in 15.74 seconds.  The qualifying efforts on the track were capped by Rachel Veneziano, who took third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.41.
 
Paige Griffith and Cassidy Davis both cleared 1.57 meters to tie for third in the high jump and Hanna Zeiler was 16th in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.41 meters. Abby Williamson rounded out the PSAC marks in the jumps with a fifth place showing in the long jump with a leap of 5.44 meters.
 
Tiffany Jolayemi and Savannah Schneck capped the qualifying marks in the hammer with Jolayemi placing ninth in the seeded section with a throw of 45.55 meters and Schneck finishing ninth in the unseeded section with a toss of 45.54 meters.
 
This weekend marked a final tune-up for Slippery Rock before the PSAC Championships next Friday through Sunday at Shippensburg University.
