Rock to host Findlay Wednesday in home opener

Slippery Rock will host Findlay in the home opener Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team will host the University of Findlay Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the 2024 home opener from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

RECORDS
Slippery Rock enters the game with a 1-0 record after posting an 18-3 win on the road at D'Youville last Saturday to open the season. Findlay enters the game with a 2-1 overall record and is coming off a pair of wins on a trip to Colorado last week. The Oilers opened the year with a 25-3 loss to No. 13 Maryville before picking up a 13-9 win at Colorado Springs and an 11-9 win at Colorado State – Pueblo.

Slippery Rock owns a 2-0 advantage in the all-time series that began in 2020. The Rock won the first meeting between the teams 12-8 on the road in 2020 and earned a 15-6 victory at home last spring.

Slippery Rock outscored Findlay 4-0 in the second quarter to open up a 9-3 halftime lead on the way to a 15-6 win in the 2023 season opener last spring at The Rock. SRU finished the game with advantages of 34-12 in total shots, 15-10 in draw controls and 19-17 in ground balls. Lauren Searles led The Rock attack with five goals and one assist. Charleigh Rondeau added two goals and a game-high 10 draw controls and Camryn Whipple and Brooke Wisniewski each scored one goal and had one assist. Gillian O'Rourke made four saves in goal to earn the win. Findlay was paced by Madeline Shewbridge with two goals and one assist and Danielle Dilorenzo with two goals. Rachel Bornstein made 12 saves in goal.

WINS IN 15 STRAIGHT SEASON OPENERS
With Saturday's win at D'Youville, Slippery Rock extended its streak of victories in the first game of the season to 15 consecutive years. The Rock have not lost the first game of the season since 2009.
 
HOME OPENER WIN STREAK
Slippery Rock has won its first home game of the year in each of the last 11 seasons and has not dropped its home opener since 2012. The Rock are facing Findlay in their home opener for the second straight season.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock scored eight goals in the first quarter and rolled to an 18-3 win on the road at D'Youville Saturday in the 2024 opener. The Rock were dominant from the opening draw and put up their highest scoring season opener since 2018. SRU got points from 12 different players in the game and saw multiple-point efforts from seven different players. Camryn Whipple led the way with five points on three goals and two assists, while Brooke Wisniewski added a team-high four goals and Charleigh Rondeau chipped in three goals and one assist to go along with a team-high eight draw controls. Rachel Mahoney scored a hat trick with three goals and Maddie Blazey, Krysta Frankowski and Erin Melcher all handed out two assists. Amelia Nitsche and Hailey Ohlsen both tallied three caused turnovers to lead the defensive effort and Gillian O'Rourke made five saves while allowing just three goals.
 
RONDEAU STUFFS THE BOX SCORE
Senior midfielder and reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Year Charleigh Rondeau picked up where she left off last spring with a dominant opener in which she tallied stats all across the box score. She finished with a game-high eight draw controls to go along with three goals, one assist, two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
 
FIRST CAREER GOALS
Slippery Rock saw three freshmen pick up their first collegiate goals in the opener with Isabella Buono, Ava Dossier and Reagan Richeson all finding the back of the net.
 
STRONG ON DEFENSE
Slippery Rock allowed just three goals in the opener with Gillian O'Rourke making five saves to post a .625 save percentage and 3.00 goals against average. Defenders Amelia Nitsche and Hailey Ohlsen both tallied three caused turnovers.
 
O'ROURKE CAN TIE WINS RECORD
Goalie Gillian O'Rourke enters this game with 24 career wins during her time at SRU. With one more victory, she can tie Emily Bitka with the SRU program record of 25 career victories.

SCOUTING THE OILERS
Findlay is under the direction of head coach Amy Long in her first season after Long spent 10 seasons as the head coach at Division III St. Mary's, where she posted a record of 90-73 with six seasons of at least 10 wins.
 
The Oilers are being outscored 43-27 through three games in large part due to a lopsided 25-3 loss to nationally ranked Maryville in the opener. Opponents are also outshooting Findlay 87-68 and have managed advantages of 41-39 in draw controls and 58-46 in ground balls. The Oilers have had the upper hand in turnovers, causing 25.
 
Tessa Chuba leads the team in numerous categories, including goals (11), points (11), draw controls (17), caused turnovers (7) and ground balls by a field player (8). Madeline Shewbridge also has 11 points with seven goals and four assists as the only other player with more than four points on the season. Olivia Alvarado (4g), Erin Kodger (3g, 1a), Paige Falk (1g, 2a), Izzy Murphy-Morrow (2a), Emma Murrell (1g) and Kaitlin Darby (1a) round out the scorers. Olivia Bakowski has played all but 15 minutes in goal and owns a 14.18 goals against average and a .418 save percentage.
 
NEXT UP
Slippery Rock stays home and will host Frostburg State University Saturday at noon. The Rock will then head south for spring break and make stops at the University of Mount Olive in North Carolina March 13 and at Lander University in South Carolina March 16.'
