SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team will welcome Lock Haven University to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division when the Bald Eagles land at James Egli Field 4 p.m. Wednesday.
 
The Rock look to stay undefeated in league play, bringing in a 2-2-3 mark on the year and a 0-0-2 record in PSAC West competition. Lock Haven, which moved over to the PSAC West this year in the absence of Mercyhurst University, enters with a 4-4-1 overall record and a 2-1 showing within the conference.

SERIES HISTORY
Wednesday will mark the 75^th all-time meeting between The Rock and the Bald Eagles, a storied matchup that dates back to 1952 in which Lock Haven owns a 36-32-6 advantage in.
 
Lock Haven is looking for its third straight win in the series, picking up a 3-1 win at SRU in 2021 and a 1-0 victory last year. SRU has seen the majority of the series' success through the 21^st century, going 16-11-1 since 2000 including wins in seven of the last 10 games.
 
The Rock are also strong at home against Lock Haven, entering with a 15-15-5 (.500) record when playing the Bald Eagles on home soil.
 
Will Harrigan and Arturo Pla Hernandis are the only two members of the active roster who played against Lock Haven the last time the Bald Eagles were in town, a 3-1 loss that saw SRU's go-ahead goal come from Ramses Minaya in the 39^th minute.

LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock moved to 0-0-2 in PSAC West play by playing California (Pa.) to a 2-2 draw on the road Oct. 5.
 
Rasmus Fugl (4') and Colton Spence (51') both tallied their first career goals for SRU. Despite leading by one goal on two separate occasions, two quick answers from the Vulcans (6', 58') matched Slippery Rock's two goals to write the game off as a tie.
 
Slippery Rock managed leads in shots (8-5), shots on goal (3-2) and corner kicks (8-3). The Rock are still above .500 in away games, now 2-1-1 on the road in 2024. 
 
LEADING THE ROCK
Six points from two goals and two assists has held Colton Swanson's position on top of Slippery Rock's statistics steady. He is tied as the team's leading goalscorer with Aaron Finney and Luke Gildea, who each have four points on the year from two goals.
 
Fugl, Pla Hernandis, Spence and Aitor Jorde have all tallied two points from one goal, while three players have one assist to their names this season: Aashi Pandher, Ignacio Rullan and Jack Smith.
 
Behind Swanson's 15 shots, Jorde has taken 14 shots, six of which have been on target. Fugl has put four of his 13 total shots on net, while Pla Hernandis has seen three of his 10 attempts land on frame.
 
Gildea and Pandher round out the top five in shots on goal, each with four. The two have combined for 16 total shots as well.
 
COLTON HONORED BY PSAC
Spence joined Adam Davies in becoming the second SRU men's soccer player this year to win a PSAC weekly award, being named the PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week Oct. 7.
 
Spence bolstered The Rock's defense to a 0-0-2 week with a 1-1 tie at home versus No. 15 Gannon University and a 2-2 draw on the road to Cal. Taking two shots on the week – one in each game – the Robert Morris University transfer added to his first shots in his Division II career by scoring his first goal with SRU against the Vulcans.
 
While the 51^st-minute goal, which came by converting a corner kick, was the highlight of Spence's week, the Cheswick, Pennsylvania native strengthened the defensive third by playing all 180 possible minutes of the two games. Spence now leads SRU's field players in averaging 88.1 minutes per game through the opening seven matches.
 
LET'S TALK DEFENSE
In addition to Spence on Slippery Rock's back line, the defense has been rounded out in the last two games by the likes of Harrigan, Smith, Gabin Lonjard, Shaun Spencer and Jeroen Van Der Veen.
 
After holding a high-powered Gannon offense to just seven shots, Slippery Rock stifled California's attack to just five total shots and two attempts on goal.
 
BETWEEN THE PIPES
Davies has not had to make a save to avoid a loss since registering a career-high seven stops against Roberts Wesleyan University but has only faced a dozen shots in the last two games.
 
The senior goalkeeper from Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania will enter the week with a 1.43 GAA and a save percentage of .655.
 
INSWINGERS AND OUTSWINGERS
Slippery Rock ranks second in the PSAC and ninth in Division II with 6.9 corner kicks per game. SRU has taken more corners than its opponent in the last six straight games, racking up a 41-15 difference in that span.
 
The Rock averaged 11.0 corner kicks per game last week, winning a 22-3 edge over opposing sides from the flags.

FINDING THE EDGE
The Rock have also outshot their opponents in all but two games this year, amassing a 25-12 difference in shots through the last two games. As a team, Slippery Rock ranks seventh in the PSAC with 12.6 shots per game.
 
Slippery Rock is 2-0-3 this year when it earns an advantage in shots, losing to only Walsh University, 1-0 (9-8 in shots) and Roberts Wesleyan, 4-0 (15-4 in shots).
 
AVOIDING THE LOSSES
Slippery Rock has only lost once in its last five games, the first time that has happened since a 2-1-3 run from Sept. 16 – Oct. 4, 2023. The Rock are similarly 1-1-3 in their last five outings, with the team's lone win coming by way of the 5-1 road win over Shippensburg University.
 
FIRST TIME SCORERS (sort of)
Fugl and Spence both scored their first career goals in a Slippery Rock jersey against California (Pa.), despite both coming from very experienced backgrounds.
 
Fugl has spent time in the third, fourth and fifth tiers of the Danish football system. The Copenhagen, Denmark striker has played with clubs such as Naestved, BK Frem, Taarnby FF and Glostrup FK.
 
Spence tallied a goal in his time with Robert Morris, netting an 88^th-minute equalizer against Green Bay in his freshman year.
 
SRU's 2-2 draw at Cal marked the first time since Sept. 17, 2022 that The Rock had two first-time goalscorers in the same game. Spencer and Max Murphy both netted their first career goals in a 4-1 win against Pitt-Johnstown 35 games ago.
 
HALFTIME ON THE SEASON
Slippery Rock is looking to go above .500 through the first half of the year for the first time since a 4-3-2 (.556) record through the first half of the 2022 season.
 
SRU currently holds a 2-2-3 overall record and would improve to .563 on the year with a win against Lock Haven Wednesday. A draw with the Bald Eagles would keep The Rock at .500, matching the team's mid-point record in the 2022 season (4-4-1).
 
The Rock were just narrowly sub-.500 a year ago with a 2-4-3 record after their first nine games.  SRU finished its 2023 campaign strong with three straight wins in its last six games.
 
LOOKING FOR THAT ELUSIVE HOME WIN
Despite success coming at home with draws against the University of the District of Columbia and the 15^th-ranked Golden Knights of Gannon, The Rock are still looking for their first home win of the year with a 0-1-2 record.
 
SRU's lone loss came to RWU at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium, leaving The Rock unbeaten this year at James Egli Field.
 
Slippery Rock won its third game at James Egli Field a year ago, defeating Daemen University, 5-2 following a loss to Walsh and a draw with Shippensburg.
 
RECORD WATCH
Now in his senior year, Pla Hernandis has the opportunity to rise through the program's top 20 in multiple different statistical categories. With 63 shots on goal, he currently ranks fourth in school history, just one shot on target behind Toby Bowser (2007-10) for third all-time.
 
Jorde has also jumped into the top 20 in shots on goal, now tied for 17^th with 29 accurate shot attempts.
 
A native of Beniparrell, Spain, Pla Hernandis has taken sole possession of sixth place all-time with 135 total shots. Six more shots will put Pla Hernandis in a tie for fifth with Jack Jarvie (1955-58).
 
Pla Hernandis is tied for 17^th with 22 career goals. Two players are tied for 15^th with 23 goals while Matt Thompson guards 14^th all-time with 25 goals.
 
Davies will join a group of 12 other goalkeepers who have suited up in net for 30 career games at Slippery Rock by playing two more games. Starting one more match would put Davies at 27 career starts, tying him with Hossam Aly for 11^th all-time.

LOCK HAVEN SCOUTING REPORT
The Bald Eagles will also look to improve upon their .500 record on the year, coming in at 4-4-1 overall.
 
Lock Haven's streak of winning four of its last five games came to a staggering halt Oct. 5 in a 7-0 loss at No. 15 Gannon. The Golden Knights were only up 1-0 at halftime but scored six more goals while outshooting the Bald Eagles 15-6 through the final 45 minutes of play.
 
Connor Swope is Lock Haven's top offensive asset with 14 points on five goals and four assists. He personally accounts for 41.7 percent of LHU's goals and 40 percent of Lock Haven's points this year. The senior from Dillsburg, Pennsylvania leads the PSAC and ranks 39^th in Division II with 1.6 points per game.
 
True freshman Ethan Beck (2-2) has started the last four games in net for LHU in place of redshirt senior Brady Freiwald (2-2-1). Beck has made 21 saves on the year with a 2.08 GAA and .677 save percentage, while Freiwald has made 12 stops, earning a 0.96 GAA and a .750 save percentage.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Rock will play their final non-conference game of the year when they host PSAC East opponent Shepherd University 3 p.m. Saturday at James Egli Field. The Rock played the Rams to a 1-1 draw on the road last season.
