Lachendro-BIery sets digs record in five-set loss to IUP

Senior libero Kate Lachendro-Biery broke the Slippery Rock volleyball program’s career digs record as part of a close five-set loss against Indiana (Pa.) Saturday at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – For a second consecutive match, the Slippery Rock University volleyball team was on the wrong side of a five-set Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division decision as Indiana University (Pa.) outlasted SRU 18-25, 27-25, 25-21, 20-25, 17-15 Saturday at Morrow Field House.

Following the setback, Slippery Rock's record drops to 8-9 overall and 1-4 inside the PSAC while the visiting Crimson Hawks improve to 13-6 overall and 3-2 in league contests.

Highlighting SRU's performance was Kate Lachendro-Biery, who compiled a match-high 35 digs and in the process broke the Slippery Rock volleyball program's career digs record which had belonged to Sally Scott for the last 24 years. The senior libero exits the weekend 1,980 digs – the fourth most by an active NCAA Division II athlete.

Slippery Rock's middle hitter combination of Lauren VonderHaar and Aslyn Pry provided SRU with great outings. Both posted six-blocks in addition to combining for nine kills via a .231 attack percentage. VonderHaar increased her season-high rejection total to 81 (22 solo / 49 assisted).

In what was her fifth start of the season, Chelsie Wheeler went for a near season-high 12 kills on a .211 attack percentage in addition to coming away with five blocks. Erica Selfridge overcame a slow start to finish with 10 kills all the while serving three aces and making 17 digs in what has become a routine double-double match for the senior outside hitter.

Rounding out The Rock's leading attackers was Marley Annis, who chipped in five kills and a block in her second start of the year. Jaeden Yost led a trio of Rock setters that saw playing time today with 19 assists, 16 digs, one ace and two kills.

Kara Pasquale continued her breakout freshman campaign by matching Selfridge for team-high honors in aces with three. She also tyed her previous season-best of 13 digs. Pasquale has now served multiple aces in five matches.

For the match, IUP held advantages over The Rock in kills (62-49) attack percentage (.147-.135) and digs (87-86) while Slippery Rock held advantages in total blocks (14-7) and aces (9-6).

Kyra Schmidt led Indiana in the win with 15 kills.

Slippery Rock returns to action when it hits the road 3 p.m. Oct. 19 at Edinboro.
