Rock drops close match at Edinboro

The Slippery Rock volleyball team lost to Edinboro, 3-1, Saturday on the road in a match that featured four close sets (25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 25-20). Erica Selfridge totaled a career-best 24 kills in the defeat.

EDINBORO, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost to Edinboro, 3-1, Saturday on the road in a match that featured four close sets (25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 25-20).

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division setback pushes The Rock's record to 8-10 overall and 1-5 in league competition while the host Fighting Scots improve to 11-9 overall and 2-5 in the PSAC West.

Erica Selfridge starred for Slippery Rock Saturday with a career-high 24 kills on a near personal-best .346 attack percentage in addition to 19 digs and three blocks as part of her 11th double-double of the year.

Selfridge, who is averaging 17.3 kills and 16.0 digs per match over SRU's last four contests, went over the 200-kill plateau for the season (220) following the trip to Edinboro to become the ninth athlete in program history to record 200 kills in four consecutive seasons – and the first to do so since Kaylee Smith (2008-11).

Rounding out The Rock's kill leaders were Chelsie Wheeler (9), Gwen McCarthy (7), Aslyn Pry (5) and Kaitlyn Danszczak (5). McCarthy was making her first start since Sept. 6 and Pry chipped in three blocks as well.

Setter Jaeden Yost provided The Rock with a great all-around match of 24 assists, 13 digs and a career-high tying five aces. Yost's seven double-doubles in 2024 trail only Selfridge for the team lead. Fellow setter Paityn Krause also turned in a double-double of 24 assists and 10 digs.

Defensively, libero Kate Kate Lachendro-Biery made 24 digs and Lauren VonderHaar posted a team-high four blocks (two solo / two assisted).

In compiling her 24 digs, Lachendro-Biery increased her career total to 2,004 to become the 23rd athlete in PSAC history with at least 2,000 digs.

In what was a re-occurring theme for the duration of Saturday's match, the opening two sets were close encounters that ultimately went to Edinboro 25-22 and 26-24 to set up a must-win third set for The Rock.

Slippery Rock responded to the pressure by jumping out to a quick 8-4 lead it never relinquished. While Edinboro did cut its deficit to just one point at 22-21, SRU withstood the charge and answered back by taking three of the set's final four points for a 25-22 win.

Selfridge accounted for seven kills in the third set, including SRU's final two points to seal the match-saving victory.

However, Slippery Rock's comeback bid ended there as Edinboro rebounded to earn a 25-20 fourth set victory to close out the match win.

The Fighting Scots used a 13-5 run midway through the deciding set to open a 17-9 lead and while SRU later mounted another rally by taking seven straight points to make it a 20-18 game, it couldn't quite push past Edinboro in the eventual five-point defeat.

For the match, Edinboro held team advantages over The Rock in attack percentage (.205-.173), aces (9-7) and total blocks (11-7) while SRU edged the Fighting Scots in digs (93-92). Both teams tallied 55 kills.

Erika Lindqvist had 10 kills and seven blocks while Makayla Neelands went for 12 kills to lead Edinboro.

Slippery Rock continues its weekend road trip 2 p.m. Saturday against Gannon University.
