Rock swept by Golden Knights

The Slippery Rock volleyball team lost a PSAC West match to Gannon in three sets (25-23, 25-16, 25-8) Sunday.

ERIE, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match to Gannon University in three sets (25-23, 25-16, 25-8) Sunday at the Hagerty Family Event Center.

The divisional loss moves The Rock's record to 8-11 overall and 1-6 in conference competition. The Golden Knights improve to 15-5 overall all the while pushing their PSAC West record to a perfect 7-0.

Lauren VonderHaar led SRU Sunday with six kills on a Rock-high .250 attack percentage in addition to making a team-best three blocks which increased her season total to 88 (26 solo / 62 assisted).

Aiding VonderHaar for SRU's defense was Aslyn Pry with two blocks and libero Kate Lachendro-Biery's team-high 12 digs.

Erica Selfridge provided The Rock with seven kills courtesy of an efficient .217 hitting percentage. Marley Annis and Chelsie Wheeler rounded out SRU's attack leaders with four kills apiece.

Jaeden Yost distributed 11 assists while serving one of two SRU aces in the match, the other coming from reserve setter Paityn Krause.

The Rock went toe-to-toe with the Golden Knights in the first set. SRU held a slim lead throughout the majority of the opener before a late Gannon rally sent the set into a 22-22 tie late. Slippery Rock was unable fend off the Golden Knights' late charge that culminated with GU capturing three of the set's final four points for a tight 25-23 victory.

Selfridge led SRU's efforts in the first set with four kills while VonderHaar and Wheeler both posted solo blocks.

However, the first set proved to be the high point of the day for Slippery Rock as Gannon proceeded to seal the sweep with convincing 25-16 and 25-8 victories in the second and third sets.

For the match, Gannon held team advantages over The Rock in kills (46-24), attack percentage (.292-.039), aces (3-2), digs (52-36) and total blocks (9-6). Ali Sorenson paced the Golden Knights with 11 kills and five blocks.

Slippery Rock is back in action 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when it opens a season-long three-match homestand against Pitt-Johnstown at Morrow Field House. The contest will serve as SRU's annual "Green Out" match.
