LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock snapped a two-match losing streak and earned its first PSAC West victory of the season in a four-set (25-23, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22) win Oct. 5 at California (Pa.).
STANDINGS CHECK
While the majority of the conference schedule is still in front of The Rock, this weekend's matches will very likely play a big role in SRU's postseason hopes at the end of the year.
Â
Entering Friday's match, Slippery Rock sits in a tie for fifth place in the PSAC West standings with IUP via matching 1-2 conference records. Clarion meanwhile is slotted third alongside Pitt-Johnstown with respective 2-1 league marks while Gannon (4-0) and Seton Hill (3-1) occupy the top two spots in the PSAC West standings early on.
Â
The top four teams from the PSAC West standings at the end of the regular season - based on win-loss record in mandated divisional play – qualifies for the PSAC Tournament. Slippery Rock is looking to earn its first conference tournament berth since 2008.
IT'S GOOD TO BE HOME
With its stretch of 15 matches away from Morrow Field House now a thing of the past, Slippery Rock will now enjoy the remainder of the season which will feature seven of the remaining 11 contests of 2024 being held at home.
Â
SRU is 11-6 at Morrow Field House over the last two seasons.
Â
THE ROCK IN HOME OPENERS
Slippery Rock has performed well when taking the court at Morrow Field House for the first time to open seasons. Since 2010, Slippery Rock is 9-4 (.692) in Morrow Field House home-openers.
Â
SRU's six previous home-openers have all gone five sets. A year ago, Slippery Rock fell to Gannon in a reverse sweep.
Â
Recent Home Openers
2023: Gannon (L, 3-2)
2022: IUP (W, 3-2)
2021: Pitt-Johnstown (L, 3-2)
2019: Kutztown (W, 3-2)
2018: Kutztown (W, 3-2)
2017: Millersville (L, 3-2)
GRABBING THE MOMENTUM
In its 15 matches this season, Slippery Rock has won the first set 10 times. A year ago, SRU won its opening set just 11 times over 29 matches.
WINNING WITH DEFENSE
Entering the weekend, Slippery Rock leads the PSAC in digs per set while ranking fourth in both blocks (2.24 per set) and opponent attack percentage (.151) as well as sixth in aces allowed per set (1.41).
Â
A staple of virtually every Rock victory this season has been a stout defensive performance as was the case against California when SRU limited the Vulcans to a .125 attack percentage.
Â
In its eight wins this season, opponents have posted an attack percentage of no higher than .139. Conversely, in its seven losses Slippery Rock opponents have closed the match with an attack percentage of under .200 just once.
Â
The Rock's defense will be put to the test Friday as Clarion's Cassidy Snider ranks third in division II in kills per set (5.17) and fourth in total kills (274) on a .278 attack percentage.
LACHENDRO-BIERY ON THE CUSP OF HISTORY
After compiling a season-high 30 digs in The Rock's win against California – her 11th match with at least 30 digs at SRU – senior libero
Kate Lachendro-Biery increased her all-time dig total to 1,913 to pass Courtney Oberlander (2015-17) for second place on Slippery Rock's career dig ledger.
Â
Heading, into this weekends home slate, Lachendro-Biery now needs 37 digs to tie Sally Scott's (1997-00) career record and 38 to become The Rock's new all-time leader.
Â
On the year, Lachendro-Biery has totaled 261 digs at 4.83 per set. She ranks third in the PSAC in digs per set and fifth in total digs. Across all of Division II, only three active athletes have more career digs than Lachendro-Biery.
Â
When the State College, Pennsylvania native does become The Rock's all-time digs leader it will mark the first career record inside the Slippery Rock volleyball program since Sara Kirsch set SRU's ace record in 2006.
Â
NCAA D2 Active Digs Leaders
1. Alli Wiese (Nebraska Kearney) – 2,563
2. Maureen Reilly (Rockhurst) – 2,334
3. Emma Hall (Gannon) – 2,153
4. Kate Lachendro-Biery – 1,913
VONDERHAAR OPENS PSAC STRONG
Lauren VonderHaar has carried over her impressive play in Slippery Rock's non-conference matches into the PSAC portion of the schedule by totaling 19 blocks, 17 kills, a .285 attack percentage and three aces in the opening three league contests of 2024.
Â
Arguably the top middle hitter in the PSAC West this season, VonderHaar is coming off a seven-block, eight-kill, one-ace showing against California.
Â
Through the opening 15 matches of the season, VonderHaar has racked up 72 blocks (17 solo / 55 assisted), 63 kills, a .222 attack percentage and eight aces. She has had at least five blocks nine times this season.
Â
On the national stage, VonderHaar is tied for 15th in Division II in total blocks and 18th in blocks per set (1.33).
Â
A WINNING COMBINATION
Slippery Rock is 12-5 (.706) over the last three years in matches that
Erica Selfridge and
Callie Chevalier each record 10 or more kills in, including a 4-2 record in such bouts this year.
Â
Two of the top outside hitters in the PSAC West, Selfridge and Chevalier continue to spearhead The Rock's attack.
Â
Selfridge has started all 15 matches en route to posting season totals of 165 kills (3.06 per set) on a .171 attack percentage to go with 20 aces, 174 digs (3.22) and 20 blocks. She leads SRU in total kills and kills per set while ranking second in digs and aces as well as fifth in blocks.
Â
Most recently, Selfridge went for 14 kills, 15 digs and three blocks for her eighth double-double of the year.
Â
Chevalier meanwhile comes into the weekend with 131 kills (2.62) via a .182 hitting percentage while also tallying 24 blocks. She has been a force on the attack as of late with 53 kills over SRU's last four matches including a 15-kill output in the victory over California.
A CAREER DAY FOR YOST
In a match that featured a team season-high 62 kills, it was setter
Jaeden Yost directing the attack for the majority of The Rock's victory over California which ultimately led to the junior registering a career-high 38 assists to go with 14 digs and two aces.
Â
One of three Rock athletes to start all 15 matches this season, Yost not only leads SRU in assists (316 / 5.85 per) she has also served a team-best 24 aces while ranking third in digs (121).
Â
From a wider perspective, Yost is now just 29 assists away from becoming the 10th athlete in program history to record at least 1,500 in a career despite having at least 11 matches left this year and her entire senior season to go.
NO ROOKIE WALL FOR PASQUALE
Statistically speaking,
Kara Pasquale produced one of the top serving performances by a Rock freshman in recent history when she posted five aces as part of SRU's four-set victory at California.
Â
Pasquale's big performance puts her in elite company among Rock rookies. Dating back to the 2008 season, there have been just five SRU freshmen to record five aces in a single match: Pasquale, Zoe Rivet (2016 vs. Chowan), Beth Stumpf (2015 vs. Gannon), Lamija Alisic (2014 vs. Seton Hill) and Kaylee Smith (2008 vs. Bowie State).
Â
A local product of Zelienople, Pennsylvania, Pasquale has appeared in 13 matches this year. She is fourth for The Rock in aces on the year with 16.
HIGHEST LEVEL OF EFFICIENCY
Aslyn Pry's breakout season has not only included 34 blocks over 15 matches, but the senior middle hitter has also accumulated 81 kills on a stellar .284 hitting percentage. On the year, Pry has finished a full match with under a .200 attack percentage just three times.
Â
Pry, who leads SRU and ranks 11th in the PSAC in attack percentage, finished one kill away from a career-high against California as part of an 11-kill, four-block effort.
ROUNDING OUT THE ATTACK
•
Chelsie Wheeler: The veteran reserve outside hitter has played all 15 matches and ranks third on The Rock in both kills (84) and blocks (28).
Â
•
Kaitlyn Danszczak: A starter in 10 of 13 matches played in what has been her first season of significant playing time, Danszczak has provided SRU with 65 kills and 15 blocks.
Â
•
Brooke Farrah: Has established herself as The Rock's second setter with 121 assists – 40 of which have come over SRU's last three matches – along with 54 digs and nine aces. Â
DIG IT
Slippery Rock has partly earned the PSAC's fourth-lowest opponent attack percentage (.151) thanks to a collective defensive effort that has seen The Rock average a league-high 17.93 digs per set.
Â
While libero
Kate Lachendro-Biery leads SRU's effort in this respect with 4.83 digs per set, seven others average at least one dig per set as well in
Erica Selfridge (3.22),
Jaeden Yost (2.24),
Paityn Krause (2.21),
Kara Pasquale (1.89),
Brooke Farrah (1.32),
Callie Chevalier (1.20) and
Gwen McCarthy (1.19).
BUCKING THE HOMECOMING TREND
A win against Clarion or IUP would mark the first time Slippery Rock has won a match at home during homecoming weekend since a 25-17, 25-18, 25-20 sweep of Indiana on Oct. 15, 2011.
Â
Since then, SRU has played at Morrow Field House during the school's homecoming festivities four times - losing in 2012 (Gannon), 2015 (Gannon / Mercyhurst), 2019 (Shepherd) and 2021 (Gannon / Edinboro).
