SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team jumped out to a two-set advantage, but couldn't withstand a late Edinboro rally in an eventual five-set loss Saturday at Morrow Field House.
Â
The Rock took the opening two sets 25-10 and 25-15, but a late Fighting Scots charge resulted in consecutive 25-21, 25-13, 15-13 set wins to finish out the comeback victory.
Â
The Pennsylvania State Athletic Western Division loss drops The Rock's record to 9-7 overall and 1-3 in conference matches. Edinboro improves to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in the PSAC West.
Â
Erica Selfridge continued her stellar junior campaign with a 17-kill, 14-dig, three-ace performance that included a .366 attack percentage.
Callie Chevalier aided the attack with nine kills.
Â
Defensively, The Rock registered 11 total blocks, highlighted by
Lauren VonderHaar's seven-block (two solo / five assisted) performance.
Chelsie Wheeler and
Alayna Chizmar each chipped in four blocks while
Mary Berger added a pair of rejections in addition to six kills on nine attempts.
Â
Slippery Rock served a season-best 12 aces led by
Jaeden Yost's four perfect serves. Selfridge (3) and
Paige Weeder (2) also had multiple aces with Chevalier, Chizmar and
Kate Lachendro adding one apiece. Lachendro also made a team-best 18 digs.
Â
SRU did not trail for the entire first and second sets as The Rock built sizable early leads in both games including a 6-0 run to start the match and a 9-5 advantage in the second en route to a pair of wins.
Â
However, The Rock could never quite find a way to put the Fighting Scots away as Edinboro closed the third set with a 10-6 run before cruising to a 25-13 victory in the fourth set to force a fifth and deciding set.
Â
The fifth set was a back-and-forth game in which neither team led by more than two points, but with the score tied at 13-13 Edinboro was converted two kills to finish off the comeback with a 15-13 win.
Â
Natalie Pallone and Bella Burrelli combined to record 32 kills for Edinboro in the win.
Â
Slippery Rock closes out its homestand 7 p.m. Oct. 3 against Seton Hill University at Morrow Field House.
