Rock cruises to sweep of Seton Hill

The Slippery Rock volleyball team closed out its three-match homestand in fine fashion Tuesday with a convincing 25-14, 25-13, 25-21 PSAC West victory over Seton Hill.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team closed out its three-match homestand in fine fashion Tuesday with a convincing Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division sweep over Seton Hill University at Morrow Field House.

The league victory improves The Rock's record to 10-7 overall and 2-3 inside the PSAC West while the Griffins drop to 6-10 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

The sweep is SRU's sixth three-set victory of the season. In what was a well-rounded team win, Slippery Rock controlled nearly every face of Tuesday's match.

Offensively, Slippery Rock converted 37 kills and registered an impressive .243 attack percentage while serving seven aces. SRU's attack percentage was its third highest single-match average of the year. Defensively, SRU limited the Griffins to an attack percentage of just .009 thanks in part to eight total blocks.

Callie Chevalier was nearly perfect on the night with 11 kills, a .500 attack percentage, one ace, four blocks (one solo / three assisted) and five digs.

Erica Selfridge posted her fifth consecutive double-double as part of a 10-kill, 11-dig, three-ace, one-block effort. Selfridge has served 10 aces over The Rock's last three matches.

Lauren VonderHaar and Chelsie Wheeler supplemented the offensive attack with six and five kills, respectively, with VonderHaar also finishing the night with five total blocks (three solo / two assisted). Fellow middle hitter Mary Berger also added a pair of blocks in the win.

Setters Jaeden Yost and Jalynn West passed out 15 assists each with Yost also serving one ace and making five digs.

Libero Kate Lachendro rounded out The Rock's leaders Tuesday with a match-best 19 digs, giving her 1,417 for her career which is good enough to pass Gaylene Abbott (1993-96) for the 11th-highest total in program history.

The Rock and Griffins split the opening 10 points of the match before SRU darted out on a 9-2 run to open a comfortable 14-7 lead in the first set on the way to an eventual 25-14 victory.

Slippery Rock never trailed in the second set as it took the opening two points of the game and once again used another decisive run – this one of the 5-0 variety – to stretch its lead to a sizable 12-5 advantage that SHU could never threaten in a 25-13 Rock decision.

SRU appeared poised to cruise to an easy win in the third with an early 13-7 lead only for the Griffins to respond by taking the next five points to pull to within one point at 13-12.

However, while SHU was able to keep the set close it could never overtake The Rock as Slippery Rock closed out the home sweep by ending the match with three straight points – two of which came from a Selfridge kill and a VonderHaar block - for the 25-21 match-deciding win.

Slippery Rock opens a four-match road trip 6 p.m. Friday at California (Pa.) before stepping out of PSAC West play briefly for a 4 p.m. Saturday match at Wheeling University.
