Rock track and field hosting summer camps June 23-25

The Rock track and field program will host four summer camps June 23-25 with separate camps geared for jumpers, sprinters and hurdlers, throwers and pole vaulters.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University track and field program will host a three-day summer camp that includes overnight stays in the SRU dorms and commuter options June 23-25 and features separate camps geared for jumpers, pole vaulters, throwers and sprinters and hurdlers.
 
All four camps will run at the same time June 23-25 with check-in set for 1 p.m. Friday and check out set for 4 p.m. Sunday. The camps will be capped at 40 athletes for each discipline and are geared for boys and girls entering grades 9-12 next fall.

JUMPERS WEEKEND

Dates: June 23 – June 25
Time: Friday June 23 at 1 p.m. – Sunday, June 25 at 4 p.m.
Location: Mihalik-Thompson Stadium
For: Athletes entering grades 9-12 in fall 2023
Description: The SRU Jumps Camp will provide a high quality, in-depth coverage of the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Campers will be able to choose which jump they want to specialize in or can gain a wide breadth of knowledge for all jumps. Jumps Camp will include seven instructional sessions and one video/lecture session touching on jumping technique and other topics directly related to the jumping events. Additionally, athletes will gain knowledge of how to properly train for the jumping events through weightlifting, plyometrics and speed and power development.
Cost: $375 for overnight campers, $300 for commuters

SPRINTERS AND HURDLERS WEEKEND

Location: Mihalik-Thompson Stadium
For: Athletes entering grades 9-12 in fall 2023
Description: SRU's Sprint & Hurdle Camp is a three-day intensive camp that will cover advanced sprinting and hurdling techniques. Sprinters will work on warm-up drills, sprint drills, sprint technique, starts and relays. Hurdlers will work on warm-up drills, hurdle drills, starts, high hurdle techniques and intermediate hurdle techniques. Sprinters and hurdlers will also go through sessions in weightlifting, plyometrics, aquatic workouts and other topics directly related to sprinting and hurdling.
Cost: $375 for overnight campers, $300 for commuters

THROWERS WEEKEND

Location: Mihalik-Thompson Stadium
For: Athletes entering grades 9-12 in fall 2023
Description: The SRU Throwers Camp will provide a high quality, in-depth coverage of the discus, shot put and javelin, as well as a brief introduction to the hammer. Throws Camp will cover warm-up drills, throwing drills and technique progressions in all three events. Additionally, the camp will review proper training for all throwing events. Sessions will include weight lifting, plyometrics, medicine ball workouts and other topics directly related to throwing. Campers will be coached by a pair of SRU Hall of Famers in Judy and Jim Geist and will also receive instruction from the throws coach of the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team from the Tokyo Games, SRU alumnus Gary Aldrich.

POLE VAULTERS WEEKEND

For: Athletes entering grades 9-12 in fall 2023
Description: The SRU Vaulters Camp will provide a high quality, in-depth coverage of the pole vault for the first 20 boys and 20 girls that apply. Vaulters Camp will cover warm-up drills, training and technique for the pole vault. The camp will be hosted by a coaching staff that has produced multiple national champions at the NCAA Division II and Division III level, including the owners of The Vault Shack in Volant, PA and Vault Athletics in North Huntingdon, PA.
Cost: $425 for overnight campers, $350 for commuters

ABOUT SRU TRACK AND FIELD
Slippery Rock is one of the best Division II track and field programs in the Atlantic Region. The Rock women's track and field team is ranked No. 1 in the region and the SRU men are ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic Region in the latest set of regional rankings. Slippery Rock's women just won their 17th PSAC title this spring, while The Rock men finished second in the PSAC Championships in 2023.
