Rock to host regional foes, No. 20 Charleston and WVSU

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team will play a pair of Atlantic Region foes this weekend with matches 3 p.m. Saturday against No. 20 Charleston at the Oxford Athletic Club and 12 p.m. Sunday against West Virginia State at the SRU Tennis Courts.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team will play a pair of Atlantic Region foes this weekend.
 
SRU is scheduled to open its weekend against the 20th-ranked University of Charleston 3 p.m. Saturday at the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pennsylvania followed by a 1 p.m. Sunday contest against West Virginia State University at the SRU Tennis Courts.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
Last Time Out: Slippery Rock earned a 7-0 shutout of Clarion Thursday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match (Results).
 
• Following a win over Clarion at No. 1 doubles, Adriana Gonzalez Sanchez and Teddi Isherwood enter the weekend having won four straight matches to improve their record this season to 7-4.
 
• Gonzalez Sanchez also represents The Rock from the No. 1 singles flight where she has split her last four bouts to push her record to 11-11 thus far in 2023.
 
• The pairing of Gabriela del Val del Toro and Nuria Martin Lopez lead SRU in total team doubles wins via a 13-8 overall record that includes a 7-4 mark in second flight competition.
 
• Individually, del Val del Toro sports a stellar 18-5 overall singles record including a nearly perfect 9-2 showing at No. 2 singles.
 
• With 86 career wins (singles+doubles), and if she continues at her current pace, del Val del Toro has a strong chance to become the 14th athlete in program history to reach 100 career wins later in the season.
 
• Martin Lopez is second on The Rock in singles victories at 12-10 overall while competing mostly out of the fourth singles flight where she is 5-5.
 
• SRU's newest doubles team consists of freshmen Dari Sakhanova and Tina Slovak who have proven to be quite formidable competition as the rookie duo have posted eight wins in their first nine matches, including three straight victories, out of the third flight.
 
• Sakhanova is also 7-3 in third-flight singles matches while Slovak has won her last two dual matches as well.
 
• Georgie Lancaster is 5-5 in dual matches, including a 4-4 showing from the sixth flight, as she continues to push her overall winning percentage closer and closer to the .500 mark at 7-9 this year.
