MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University women's track and field team recorded 17 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference automatic qualifying marks and three NCAA provisional marks at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational that concluded Saturday evening after three days of competition at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Â
The meet organizers from Myrtle Beach Sports briefly paused the meet Saturday to recognize Slippery Rock head coach
John Papa and thank him for bringing his Rock teams to Myrtle Beach for the last two decades. Papa, who has announced he will retire this June after devoting more than 40 years of his life to SRU, was on his final spring break trip with The Rock.
Â
Slippery Rock's three NCAA marks this weekend came from
Cecily Greggs in the high jump and
Trinity Clark and
Skylar Sherry in the javelin. Greggs took second overall in the high jump with an outdoor personal best of 1.73 meters. Clark was second in the javelin at 43.40 meters, well off her season-best from last weekend and Sherry was third with a mark of 42.99 meters, also just below her mark from last weekend.
Â
In addition to those marks, Rock distance runner
Marianne Abdalah narrowly missed the NCAA standard in the 10,000-meter run and
Jena Reinheimer was just short of the mark in the hammer throw. Abdalah won the 10,000m with a time of 36:55.04, which is currently the third-fastest time by a Division II athlete so far this spring. Reinheimer was third in the hammer with a mark of 50.48 meters, which currently sits 10th among Division II athletes.
Â
Greggs' high jump mark of 1.73 meters currently ranks fourth-best in Division II, while Clark (2nd, 47.44m) and Sherry (5th, 44.11m) both own top five marks in the javelin from last week to give SRU five athletes with top 10 marks in the country, as of Saturday evening.
Â
Clark also scored a third-place finish in the discus this weekend with a throw of 40.98 meters to lead three athletes to a PSAC mark. Reinheimer took fourth at 40.53 meters and
Tiffany Jolayemi was eighth at 37.82 meters. Reinheimer also hit the PSAC standard in the shot put with a 14th place showing and a toss of 11.66 meters.
Â
Chaley Younkin joined Greggs in hitting the PSAC mark in the high jump as she took sixth with a clearance of 1.58 meters. Younkin also reached the PSAC standard in the 100-meter hurdles with a 17th place finish in 15.85 seconds.
Â
SRU got three other PSAC marks in the jumps, with
Kendall Grossman placing fourth in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.50 meters,
Aleks Brozeski placing eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.41 meters and
Ashanti Richardson placing 16th in the triple jump at 10.81 meters.
Â
Morgan Donatelli recorded a pair of PSAC marks on the track with a fifth place showing in the 400-meter dash in 58.09 seconds and an 18th place finish in the 200-meter dash in 25.77 seconds. Donatelli also teamed with
Samantha Gilbert,
Regan Johnson and
Emma Fox to place eighth in the 4x100-meter relay in 49.40 seconds and then teamed with
Lorna Speigle,
Madison Olsen and
Rachel Veneziano to finish sixth in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:04.72.
Â
Veneziano recorded her own PSAC mark in the 400-meter hurdles with a fifth place finish in 1:07.68 to round out the PSAC automatic qualifying marks this weekend.
Â
The Shamrock Invitational featured more than 1,000 athletes from all over the east coast from schools in all NCAA divisions, as well as NAIA and junior colleges.
Â
Slippery Rock will now shift its focus to three straight local meets, first visiting Carnegie Mellon March 25-26 before hosting the Dave Labor Invitational April 2 and traveling to the Westminster Invite April 9.
