Rock loses at Gannon

The Slippery Rock volleyball team lost a road match to Gannon in three sets Saturday.

ERIE, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University volleyball team lost a road match to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division foe Gannon University in three sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-9) Saturday.

The loss drops The Rock's record to 11-16 overall and 6-8 in the PSAC West while Gannon improves to 21-5 and 13-1 in league competition following the win.

The trio of Abigail Koeller, Erica Selfridge and Callie Chevalier paced SRU's attack Saturday as Koeller totaled eight kills and two aces with Chevalier and Selfridge both chipping seven kills. Selfridge also had 10 assists, eight digs, one block and one ace.

In addition to the aces by Koeller and Selfridge, Jaeden Yost, Maria Lucas and Paige Weeder all produced one ace apiece. Yost also distributed 11 assists.

Defensively, Abigail Nigon recorded three total blocks (1 solo / 2 assisted) while Kate Lachendro made a match-high 18 digs.

The Rock and Golden Knights played to a 12-12 tie to the open the day before Gannon was able to pull away with the set courtesy of a 7-1 run that opened a comfortable six-point advantage GU would never relinquish in a 25-21 loss.

Gannon darted out to a quick 13-3 lead in the second set and while Slippery Rock was able to cut GU's lead to as little as three points at 16-13, the early deficit proved too much to overcome in an eventual 25-18 Golden Knight win.

After trading points early on, Gannon took control of the final set for a 25-9 match-deciding victory.

As a team, Gannon held advantages over The Rock in kills (44-24), attack percentage (.321-.086), aces (12-6) and blocks (6-3). Maddie Blake had 13 kills, 18 digs, three aces and two blocks to lead GU.

Slippery Rock steps out of PSAC West competition for a final time in 2022 when it hosts Salem University 6 p.m. Nov. 1 at Morrow Field House. SRU has already defeated Salem two times this year.
