Rock loses to Clarion in three sets

The Slippery Rock volleyball team closed out the weekend with a three-set loss to Clarion Saturday in PSAC West competition 25-15, 25-16, 25-23.

CLARION, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University volleyball team concluded its weekend with a three-set loss at Clarion University Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition.

Clarion (12-6, 4-2 PSAC West) earned the straight-set victory over The Rock (4-15, 1-5 PSAC West) with wins of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-23.

Slippery Rock was led by Erica Selfridge, who recorded nine kills while making 10 digs. Chelsie Wheeler had five kills on a .257 attack percentage. Sydney Ryan came off the bench for SRU to register five kills of her own, matching her season-best showing.

Stephanie O'Donnell (2), Abigail Koeller (1), Tiara Teague (1) and Kate Lachendro all added one kill apiece while Selfridge and Lauren Weber both served an ace to round out SRU's attack.

Peytan Gullickson and Taylor Fellers guided The Rock's offense with 12 and nine assists, respectively. Defensively, Lachendro recorded a team-high 16 digs with O'Donnell and Lauren Crytzer posting one block each.

Following 10-point and nine-point losses in the first and second sets, Slippery Rock played its best set of the day in the third game as SRU sprinted out to a 16-6 lead thanks in part to a balance attack that saw Selfridge and Wheeler both post two kills in addition to one each by Teague and Ryan.

However, Clarion answered The Rock's early run with surge of its own in the form of eight consecutive points to trim Slippery Rock's lead down to 16-14 at the mid-way point of the match.

SRU fended off Clarion's comeback bid for the majority of the remainder of the set, but with The Rock leading 23-21 the Golden Eagles took four straight points to finish off the rally, and the match, via a 25-23 win.

Julia Piccolino totaled a match-best 14 kills to lead Clarion.

Slippery Rock returns home to kickoff homecoming weekend when it hosts Edinboro University 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at Morrow Field House.
