#SRUSeniorDay Celebration: Rock Tennis

Throughout the month of April, Slippery Rock will celebrate the seniors on each of its spring teams that did not have the chance to have their traditional Senior Day celebrations. This second feature of the month focuses on The Rock tennis team and seniors Lacey Cohen and Viola Lugmayr.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- The Slippery Rock University athletic department would like to recognize senior tennis players Lacey Cohen and Viola Lugmayr in the second of multiple #SRUSeniorDay features this spring that will celebrate The Rock's spring senior student-athletes.

ABOUT #SRUSeniorDay
Throughout the month of April, the Slippery Rock athletic communication office will be recognizing The Rock's senior student-athletes online as a way to celebrate the seniors that did not get to have their traditional Senior Day celebrations this spring.

Each weekday throughout the month, a few seniors will be profiled on Twitter (@Rock_Athletics) with graphics, photos and quotes from the student-athlete about their time at SRU.

Once each senior from each respective spring team has been profiled on Twitter, we'll create a page like this one for each team that includes all of the graphics and complete responses to a number of questions about the student-athletes' experiences at SRU.

Follow along with the hashtag #SRUSeniorDay on our Twitter page and come back to the web weekly to check for more features on the SRU spring seniors.

IN HER OWN WORDS
• One word you would use to describe your experience at Slippery Rock?
VL: FAMILY. As an international student, I would not have stayed for three years without my friends, teammates, professors and coaches at The Rock. The time difference to my home country, Austria, has made it difficult to stay in contact with my family and friends, but with the friends I made at The Rock, I was able to create a family away from home from day one. Distractions, exciting adventures, movie nights, overnight stays in hotel rooms and hilarious times at dinners with the team made me feel like home at The Rock. Slippery Rock University has not only given me an incredible education, but more importantly has given me experience for life and a family that will always be in my heart no matter where I go.

• What is/are your favorite Memory/Memories from your time at SRU?
VL: Without a doubt, the spring break trips to Hilton Head have been the best memory from my time at SRU. The incredible sunrises, amazing dinners prepared by coach Matt Meredith, the best ice cream ever, long beach bike rides, mini golfing competitions and fun game nights with the team have made those trips unforgettable experiences that I will miss.

• Most memorable game/event from your SRU career?
VL: The most memorable event of my SRU career is the moment my dubs partner, Lois Page, and I won the ITA Regional and PSAC doubles championships. These moments were so unique. Our hard work finally paid off. That win was the ticket for a trip to the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia. I could not have done it without you Lois, and I would not have wanted to be there with anybody other than you. You are going to do many more great things at The Rock and I promise, I will come to England very soon to compete with you on my side on grass.

• When will you graduate? What will your degree be in?
VL: I am going to graduate in December 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science.

• Will you be attending graduate school? If so, do you know where and what major?
VL: I am planning on attending graduate school back home in Austria for my Master´s in Training and Sport, a major that combines sports management, research and training.

• Do you plan to use the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA?
VL: I am not planning on using the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA. I am receiving the NCAA Division II Degree Completion Scholarship for the Fall 2020 semester, which I will use to complete my 480-hour internship, the last requirement to complete my major. I will work in Tucson, Arizona at the University of Arizona, which hosts the largest and most successful collegiate-based adaptive athletics sports program in the United States.

• Favorite class and/or professor at SRU?
VL: My favorite class at The Rock was Disability Sports in the 21st century. This class was recommended by one of my dearest friends, and I am incredibly thankful for that. Mrs. Fagan, the instructor of this class, is an incredibly passionate woman, who has radiant energy that drew me into wanting to volunteer for as many adaptive sports programs as possible. Through her, I have discovered my passion for working in the field of adaptive athletics. Since taking her class, I have worked with Envision Blind Sports (Tennis and Skiing/Snowboarding), the Steel City Slam (Wheelchair Rugby), the Austrian Open (international wheelchair tennis tournament) and others. This class has changed my career goals and I am thankful because there is so much knowledge and expertise that athletes with disabilities deserve to get from coaches just like any other able-bodied athletes.

• Any message you want to share with your teammates that are coming back next year?
VL: Marilyn Monroe said: "Sometimes good things fall apart so better things could fall together." I dare to say that with this year's team, our confidence, our team spirit and our will to fight for each other, we would have crushed other teams and probably would have won the championships. Even if some of us won´t be there next season, others will join the team and you all will do great. Guys, we are a family and me leaving The Rock does not mean leaving the family. However, we will get new family members, which means that we will only get better and stronger as a family. I love you guys!!
