SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Former Slippery Rock University baseball standout Lou Trivino has been called up to the major leagues by the Oakland Athletics, the organization announced Tuesday.
He will wear No. 62 for the A's and be eligible to pitch Wednesday night against the Chicago White Sox. Trivino joins Matt Adams of the Washington Nationals as active players on major league rosters from Slippery Rock. SRU is the only school in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference with two players currently in the majors.
Trivino began the season with the A's Triple-A affiliate the Nashville Sounds where he had one save and a perfect 0.00 ERA, eight strikeouts and no walks in three games.
An 11th round pick by the A's in the 2013 first-year player draft, Trivino has climbed through the minor leagues over the last five years, excelling at each stop along the way. He has pitched in 169 minor league games (422.2 innings) with five different Oakland minor league affiliates, winning 30 contests, with nine saves a 3.92 ERA and .249 batting average against.
Trivino began his professional career as a starting pitcher and was solid, but his career took off when he moved to the bullpen. Over the last two years, Trivino has made 60 relief appearances (91 innings) between Nashville and Double-A Midland, going 9-4 with seven saves and a 2.77 ERA.
A native of Green Lane, Pennsylvania, Trivinio pitched at Slippery Rock for three seasons from 2011-13. In three years at SRU, Trivino was 19-9 with a 1.99 ERA and 217 strikeouts over 213 innings. He earned All-America honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association in 2012 in addition to being a three-time consensus all-region selection and a three-time All-PSAC honoree.
One of the most successful baseball programs in the Atlantic Region, Slippery Rock has recorded winning seasons in 22 of the last 23 seasons and has had 21 players selected in the MLB draft dating back to the 1972 season.
