Hess, McQuaide pace Rock at Westminster

Reagan Hess won the long jump with an NCAA provisional mark to lead The Rock to a total of 17 PSAC marks, two NCAA marks and four event wins at the Westminster Invitational.

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's track and field team recorded 17 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks, two NCAA provisional marks and won four events at the Westminster College Invitational Saturday.
 
The two NCAA marks both came in winning efforts as Reagan Hess won the long jump with a leap of 5.86 meters and Courtney McQuaide won the pole vault with a clearance of 3.65 meters. Hess also hit a PSAC mark in the 200-meter dash with a sixth place finish in 25.64 seconds. Maddy Marshall was fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.50 meters and Roxanne Dunn was 12th at 3.35 meters to give SRU three vaulters with at least the PSAC standard.
 
The lone event win on the track came in the 4x400-meter relay, where Vanessa Shedlock, Aerial Dukes, Emily Horstman and Katie Teed joined together to post a time of 3:55.46. All four of them also hit at least one PSAC mark in an individual event Saturday. Shedlock placed second in the 400-meter dash in 57.19 seconds to headline those performances. Horstman was fifth in the 200-meter dash in 25.32 seconds, while Dukes was eighth in 25.90 seconds. Teed placed eighth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.95, where she was joined by Hali Olson in ninth in 1:07.09.
 
The final PSAC mark on the track belonged to Sophie Mazza, who was fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.08 seconds.
 
The other event win and six PSAC marks on the day came from the throwers, headlined by Kelci Yale with a winning mark of 44.40 meters in the hammer throw. Abby Way was second at 43.15 meters and Anna Frengel was sixth at 41.32 meters to give SRU three PSAC marks in the hammer.
 
Frengel also hit the PSAC mark in the shot put with a fourth place finish and a throw of 12.89 meters. She was joined by Rachel Demaria in sixth at 12.66 meters.
 
The final conference mark of the day belonged to Elaina Powell with a second place finish in the javelin with a mark of 38.65 meters.
 
The Rock women have a select group of 11 additional athletes competing this weekend at Bucknell in a meet that will conclude Sunday evening.
 
Many of the athletes competing at Westminster Saturday will return to action Thursday when Slippery Rock hosts the SRU Open.
