TAMPA, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 with its third consecutive one-goal victory Monday night after defeating the University of Tampa 13-12.

The Rock led by five goals, 13-8, with less than nine minutes to play, but the Spartans scored four unanswered goals, including two in the final minute, to make things interesting.

Slippery Rock improves to 3-0 to open the year and all three games have been decided by one goal. All three games also came down to the final seconds as SRU won the opener over Seton Hill with 25 seconds to go, tied the game against Saint Anselm with no time on the clock before winning in overtime and had to defend Monday when Tampa won the final draw control of the game with less than 30 seconds to play. The Spartans drop to 4-4 with the loss.

Monday night's game marked the first meeting between the two programs and the second game of a three-game road trip to the state of Florida for SRU, which will play Georgetown College (Kentucky) Thursday at Ave Maria University to close out the trip.

The Rock got hat tricks from
Caitlynn Palladino,
Bre Vodde and
Tia Torchia Monday night with Palladino adding an assist to finish with a team-high four points. Vodde's three goals all came in the opening period and helped SRU get out to a 7-2 halftime lead.

Chynna Chan added two goals and one assist to net three points and
ShyAnne Toomer capped the multi-point scorers with one goal and one assist.
Tori Penders rounded out the scoring with one goal.

Emily Bitka improved to 3-0 in goal after recording five saves and allowing 12 goals.

Tampa was paced by Caroline Forrester with a game-high four goals and Maggie Gladden with three goals, which all came in the final nine minutes of play. Amanda Rom added one goal and handed out three assists to cap the top scorers for the hosts.

Mackenzie Hackett took the loss in goal after recording five saves and allowing 13 goals.

Slippery Rock finished the game with a 22-21 advantage in total shots and an 18-17 edge in shots on goal. The Spartans were credited with a 13-12 edge in draw controls and a 22-14 advantage in ground balls. SRU was solid on the clear, failing just twice to finish 15-of-17, while Tampa was 16-of-20 on its clear attempts.

The Rock will return to action Thursday at Ave Maria University against Georgetown to close the spring break trip. First draw is set for 2 p.m.
