WEXFORD, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost a close non-conference match against West Virginia State University, 5-4, Saturday night at the Pure Athletex Sports Complex in Wexford, Pennsylvania.

Slippery Rock (7-8) exited doubles play with a 2-1 lead on West Virginia State (14-3), but the Yellow Jackets took four of six singles matches to earn the narrow road victory.

The Rock had great success in doubles play after shuffling around its normal lineup. SRU jumped out to a 2-0 lead with wins from the second and third flight when
Nina Barbano and
Amanda Bruscemi defeated Laura Isbey and Diana Cotoros, 8-5, while
Kylee Woodman and
Stephanie Fortier beat Brenda Cumpa and Kayla McKnight, 8-3.

The Yellow Jackets avoided the doubles shutout with an 8-3 win in the first flight after Brittany Franco and Nina Dillwald bested
Tiffany Kollah and
Carla Corrochano Moracho.

Barbano put The Rock up 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at second singles against Isbey. The win was Barbano's second in a row and her team-leading 12th on the year overall.

West Virginia State evened the match at 3-3 with consecutive wins at third and first singles as Dillwald downed Kollah 6-0, 6-1 and Franco defeated Corrochano 6-1, 6-3.

Fortier gave Slippery Rock the lead once again with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Cotoros in the fifth flight for her fourth win of the year.

However, WVSU came away victorious in the final two singles matches of the night to pull out the 5-4 team win. Both bouts were tightly contested as McKnight defeated
Allie Welch in the sixth slot 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 and Charlotte Sandy barely got past Bruscemi in the fourth flight 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Slippery Rock returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play when it hosts Edeinboro University 3:30 p.m. April 6 at the SRU Tennis Courts.
