CLARION, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team concluded the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division portion of its 2015-16 schedule with an 8-1 win at Clarion University Wednesday night.

The win, SRU's sixth in its last seven matches, improves The Rock's record to 13-9 overall and 3-3 in league play. Clarion dropped to 4-10 on the year overall and 0-6 in PSAC West matches.

Prior to the match, the NCAA released its latest regional rankings and Slippery Rock was slotted sixth, a one spot improvement over the initial rankings released last week. The top seven teams in the rankings at the conclusion of the season qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

Slippery Rock jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on the Golden Eagles thanks to its second and third doubles teams, which produced matching 8-1 victories.
Nina Barbano and
Amanda Bruscemi defeated Sarah Robbins and Jessica Kennelly in the second flight while
Stephanie Fortier and
Kylee Woodman bested Michelle Petrilla and Allison Probst in the third flight.

With one match to play in the regular season, Barbano and Bruscemi are 7-1 while Woodman and Fortier are 6-1.

Clarion moved to within one of The Rock by way of Alivia Arnold's and Maria Snyder's 9-8 (7-5) victory at No. 1 doubles over
Tiffany Kollah and
Carla Corrochano Moracho.

However, any thoughts of Clarion comeback were promptly put to rest as the middle portion of Slippery Rock's singles lineup rattled off three wins to clinch the match.

Bruscemi defeated Kennelly 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles followed by a 6-0, 6-0 win by Kollah against Robbins from the third slot. Fortier sealed the contest for Slippery Rock in the fifth flight with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph against Reddy.

SRU's success continued even with the match already decided as
Allie Welch (6-2, 6-2), Barbano (6-2, 6-1) and Corrochano (6-2, 6-0) were all victorious as well en route to the 8-1 win.

Slippery Rock concludes its regular season with a key in-region contest 1 p.m. Saturday against the University of Charleston in Morgantown, West Virginia. Charleston was positioned fifth in the latest regional rankings.
