Results CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team saw its five-match winning streak come to an end Saturday in a 9-0 loss to No. 18 California (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition.
Despite the loss, Slippery Rock still enters its final two matches of the season at 12-8 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Vulcans improved to 15-2 overall and 6-0 in conference matches with the win.
Slippery Rock's streak of 12 consecutive doubles victories finally came to end Saturday as the Vulcans took all three contests and never looked back en route to the 9-0 win.
Veronika Mikulis and Alyssa Savill defeated
Stephanie Fortier and
Kylee Woodman, 8-0, at third doubles for California's first point of the day. Jasi Witherspoon and Holly Bennett added an 8-3 win against
Nina Barbano and
Amanda Bruscemi in the second flight while Kiefer Shaw and Lena Dimmer completed the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win against
Carla Corrochano Moracho and
Tiffany Kollah in the first flight.
California sealed the win with victories at second and third singles as Dimmer defeated Kollah 6-1, 6-0 and Witherspoon beat Bruscemi 6-2, 6-4 for the match-clinching point.
Mikulis earned a 6-3, 6-1 win against Fortier in the fourth flight followed by Savill edging Woodman in the sixth slot 6-4, 6-3. Bennett also added a 6-3, 6-3 win against
Allie Welch at fifth singles.
In the closest match of the afternoon Shaw just got past Barbano at No. 1 singles 6-4, 7-6.
Slippery Rock closes out its 2015-16 PSAC West Schedule 4 p.m. Wednesday at Clarion.
