Regional Rankings SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team extended its winning streak to a season-long four matches with a 9-0 win against Grove City College Wednesday afternoon at the SRU Tennis Courts.
The non-conference victory extends The Rock's record to 11-8 on the year overall. Grove City dropped to 9-8 with the loss.
Prior to Wednesday's match the NCAA released its initial regional rankings and Slippery Rock was slotted seventh in the Atlantic Region behind Indiana (Pa.), West Virginia State, California (Pa.), Mercyhurst, Charleston and West Liberty.
The NCAA regional rankings determine the participants for the NCAA Tournament. The Atlantic Region consists of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), Mountain East Conference (MEC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). All three conference tournament champions receive an automatic bid this season with the top-four remaining teams in the final regional rankings receiving at-large bids. Updated regional rankings will be released each week until the conclusion of the season.
As has been the case as of late, Slippery Rock once again received exceptional play from its doubles team that set the pace for match.
Amanda Bruscemi and
Nina Barbano remained perfect on the year with an 8-1 victory against Julie Becker and Leah Thomsen from the second flight. The duo is now 5-0 this season.
Tiffany Kollah and
Carla Corrochano Moracho improved their record to 3-2 on the season from the top spot in The Rock's double lineup with a convincing 8-1 victory against Maggie Manchester and Karolina Lagerquist.
SRU pushed its lead to 3-0 on Grove City when
Courtney Gallagher and
Stephanie Fortier downed Alyssa Jackson and Taylor Bradley, 8-2.
Gallagher, who was making her first appearance of the season for The Rock, shutout Melissa Karidis 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles for SRU's fourth point of the evening. Fortier clinched the match for Slippery Rock with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph against Thomsen in the third flight.
The Rock's veteran contingent continued to pile up wins as
Kylee Woodman produced a 6-0, 6-0 victory of her own against Parks from the fifth slot.
SRU freshmen Bruscemi and
Allie Welch proceeded to earn the next two points with respective wins at second and fourth singles. Bruscemi beat Lagerquist 6-2, 6-0 and Welch handled Bradley 6-4, 6-0.
Kollah secured the Slippery Rock shutout with a 7-5, 6-1 win against Manchester from the first flight to close out the match.
Slippery Rock concludes its 2015-16 home schedule 4 p.m. Thursday against Edinboro University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play at the SRU Tennis Courts.
