Rock bested by No. 38 Indiana

Slippery Rock opened PSAC West play with a 9-0 loss to No. 38 Indiana (Pa.) Wednesday evening at the SRU Tennis Courts.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play with a 9-0 loss to No. 38 Indiana (Pa.) Wednesday evening at the SRU Tennis Courts.
 
The loss drops The Rock's record to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in league play. Indiana, which was ranked 38th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, remains undefeated at 8-0 overall and 1-0 in PSAC West matches with the win.
 
Slippery Rock was unable to overcome a slow start in doubles play as the Crimson Hawks carried over its strong doubles performance into singles competition to earn the shutout win.
 
Alanna McFail and Claudia Menes earned the first point of the match with an 8-1 win against Tiffany Kollah and Kylee Woodman at third doubles. Jarka Petercakova and Luise Von Agris also recorded an 8-1 victory against SRU's No. 1 doubles team of Carla Corrochano Moracho and Nina Barbano.
 
In the closest match of doubles play, Stephanie Fortier and Amanda Bruscemi were edged by Rachel Wood and Raquel Gonzalez, 8-4.
 
IUP clinched the match with wins at fourth and sixth singles where Sophie Butland defeated Bruscemi (6-1, 6-3) and Wood beat Allie Welch (6-2, 6-1), respectively.
 
Slippery Rock stayed close with IUP in the remaining four singles matches, but was unable to come away with a victory.
 
Menes downed Fortier 6-3, 6-3 in the fifth flight and Von Agris defeated Kollah 6-1, 6-4 in the third slot.
 
At No. 1 singles Petercakova tallied a 6-2, 6-3 win against Corrochano and in the closest bout of the evening Gonzalez narrowly got the best of Barbano in the second flight. Barbano won the first set 6-2 while Gonzalez evened the match with a 6-2 win of her own in the second before eventually winning the super tiebreaker 10-3 to claim the win.
 
Slippery Rock will look to rebound with a win 8:15 p.m. March 26 at Mercyhurst University.
