Results MONROEVILLE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost a non-conference match at sixth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University,8-1, Saturday evening.
The loss drops The Rock's record to 3-2 on the season. Carnegie Mellon improves to 5-0 with the win. The match was SRU's first competition of the spring season.
Slippery Rock's first and third doubles teams lost close matches to the Tartans. At first doubles
Nina Barbano and
Carla Corrochano Moracho, which are ranked as the No. 15 doubles team in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region, lost to Cori Sidell and Minami Makino, 8-5.
Tiffany Kollah and
Kylee Woodman dropped their third doubles match to Abbey Hamstra and Nicholle Torres, 8-3.
CMU completed the doubles sweep when Brooke Tsu and Jamie Vizelman bested
Amanda Bruscemi and
Stephanie Fortier, 8-0.
Moracho defeated Tsu in No. 1 singles after a tight match in which Moracho won 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. Moracho is now 5-3 in singles play this season.
Barbano and Kollah also gave solid showings at second and third singles, Barbano fell to Sidell 6-3, 6-4 and Kollah lost to Torres 6-2, 6-3.
Charlotte Deiss defeated
Allie Welch in sixth singles 6-4, 6-1 and Katie Lai downed Fortier 6-3, 6-2 at fifth singles. Vizelman came away victorious over Bruscemi 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles to conclude the match.
Slippery Rock returns to compettion 3 p.m. Feb. 13 at Alderson-Broaddus in Philippi, West Virginia. Slippery Rock shutout Alderson-Broaddus, 9-0, a year ago.
