OLEAN, N.Y. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost at St. Bonaventure University, 5-2, in non-conference play Saturday afternoon at the Bonaventure Fitness Center in Olean, New York.
Since St. Bonaventure, which competes in the Atlantic 10 Conference, hosted SRU the match was played utilizing NCAA Division I scoring that awards one point to the school that wins the majority of the three contested doubles matches.
The loss drops Slippery Rock's record to 4-3 overall on the season. St. Bonaventure improved to 2-6 in 2015-16 with the win.
The Bonnies earned the first point of the day by taking all three doubles matches.
Carla Corrochano Moracho and
Nina Barbano lost at first doubles to Gabriella Bowe and Mara Martinez-Santori, 6-3.
Kylee Woodman and
Tiffany Kollah also lost 6-3 out of the third flight to Francesca Chin and Dominique Mortier.
Lauren Doversola and Mariam Skhirtadze rounded out the doubles sweep for St. Bonaventure with a 6-1 win over
Amanda Bruscemi and
Stephanie Fortier.
The singles matches featured a pair of Slippery Rock freshmen coming up with big wins in the fourth and sixth flight; Bruscemi bested Mortier (4-6, 7-5, 10-7) while
Allie Welch took down Chin (2-6, 6-1, 10-3).
Bruscemi and Welch have each won their last two matches. Welch is now 6-4 on the season while Bruscemi has evened her overall record to 4-4 in her rookie campaign. Both athletes have been exceptional in dual matches this year with matching 4-2 marks when competing for Slippery Rock.
Barbano and Bowe split the opening two sets before Bowe was able to eek out a win in the third to take the No. 2 singles contest 6-3, 2-6, 6-0.
Corrochano and Kollah each dropped matches 6-3, 6-3 to Santori and Skhirtadze at first and third singles, respectively. Doversola closed out the day for the Bonnies with a 6-1, 7-5 win against Fortier in the fifth flight.
Slippery Rock will head south to Florida for its next five matches March 7-12. Slippery Rock plays Southern Indiana (March 7), Walsh (March 8), Florida Tech (March 10), Eastern Florida State (March 11) and Embry-Riddle (March 12) before returning home.
