ERIE, Pa. – Members of the Slippery Rock University women's tennis team represented the program in fine fashion with several strong performances at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region Championships recently.
SRU sent six members of this year's team to compete in both the singles and doubles regional tournaments, which took place Sept. 19-20.
Leading the way for The Rock was sophomore
Nina Barbano, who made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the singles bracket. She began the tournament with a 6-1, 6-1 opening-round victory against Mercyhurst's Adina Spahalic. After sailing through a 6-2, 6-0 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan's Julia Uchoa in the second round, Barbano outlasted Maddy Shaak of West Chester for a 6-4, 1-6, 10-8 triumph in the third round.
However, her run to the finals fell just short as Califronia's Kiefer Shaw, the tournament's top seed, beat Barbano 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. Barbano has totaled a 5-2 record through two individual tournaments this season.
Sophomore
Carla Corrochano Moracho also earned a win in the opening round of the singles tournament by defeating Riley Greenwood of Mercyhurst 6-0, 6-0 before suffering a narrow 6-1, 2-6, 5-10 loss to Indiana's Rachel Wood.
Junior
Tiffany Kollah, junior
Kylee Woodman and freshman
Allie Welch all dropped their first round matches, but rebounded with quality performances in the consolation bracket.
Kollah won three matches to advance to the consolations semifinals. She nearly secured a spot in the finals, but Raquel Cabero of West Liberty just edged her out with a 9-7 win. Woodman and Welch each earned spots in the consolation quarterfinals before ultimately losing their respective matches.
The Rock's strong play carried over into doubles play where the pairings of Barbano / Moracho, Kollah / Welch and Woodman / freshman
Amanda Bruscemi represented Slippery Rock.
Barbano / Moracho and Kollah / Welch both won their first and second round matches to advance to the quarterfinals before bowing out in the quarterfinals with 8-6 and 8-1 defeats.
After dropping their first-round contest in the champions bracket, Woodman and Bruscemi rattled off three straight wins to advance to the consolation bracket finals against Charleston's Taylor Todd and Jackie Bakos. The Rock duo kept their momentum going and pulled off an 8-6 victory to cap SRU's weekend off with a win in the consolation finals.
The finals of the singles and doubles championship brackets will be played Monday to decide the 2015 ITA Atlantic Region champions.
Slippery Rock opens the team competition portion of its 2015 schedule Wednesday when it hosts Westminster College for a 5:30 p.m. match at the SRU Tennis Courts.
