Results ERIE, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team picked up a crucial Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference victory on the road with a 5-4 win against Edinboro University at the Westwood Racquet Club in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Slippery Rock overcame a 2-1 deficit at the conclusion of doubles play with four clutch wins in singles competition to earn the win.
The victory improves The Rock's overall record to 7-7 on the year and 1-2 in PSAC play. The loss drops Edinboro's record to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in league matches. Entering the match, both teams were ranked in the top 10 in Atlantic Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association with Slippery Rock slotted seventh and Edinboro eighth.
Carla Corrochano Moracho and
Nina Barbano produced The Rock's first point of the match with an 8-5 victory against Katie Allen and Oranzo Carrillo at No. 1 doubles, improving the rookie team's record to 8-8 on the season in the process.
The Fighting Scots pulled ahead of Slippery Rock after compiling a default win at second doubles to go with a narrow 8-6 victory by Lydia Browne' and Julia Hellstern at third doubles against
Stephanie Fortier and
Kylee Woodman.
The key to The Rock's comeback against the Fighting Scots were wins at first, second, third and sixth singles.
After a string of close losses against some of the best players in the region, Moracho persevered to earn the win in the first flight against Julia Hellstern. Moracho dropped the first set, 7-6, before rebounding with back-to-back 6-2 wins in the second and third sets to secure the point. She is now 7-6 in dual matches and 8-8 on the year overall.
Barbano and
Ana Petrovic followed their classmate's lead with wins out of the second and third flights. Barbano downed Carrillo, the No. 14 player in the region according to the ITA, 6-1, 6-2 while Petrovic bested Tmusic 6-3, 6-4. Barbano is now 10-7 on the year in singles play.
The Rock's fourth singles win came from Woodman, who dealt Nevena Kulina a 6-1, 6-2 loss at No. 6 singles in what was Woodman's first singles match of the season.
Fortier lost a tough match at fourth singles (3-6, 6-2, 7-5) to Baldwin while Allen beat
Emily Munson in the fifth flight (6-2, 6-2) for the Fighting Scots' final two points of the afternoon.
Slippery Rock will look to win its third match in as many tries when it plays at Seton Hill on April 7.
