Results INSTITUTE, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost at nationally ranked West Virginia State, 8-1, Saturday afternoon in its final non-conference match of the 2015 season.
Saturday's contest featured two of the top teams in the Atlantic Region. West Virginia State entered the match ranked fourth in the region by the NCAA and No. 47 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Slippery Rock was ranked ninth in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic Region standings.
Slippery Rock was never able to recover from losing all three of its doubles matches that gave the Yellow Jackets a commanding 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
Slippery Rock (10-10) earned its lone point of the day at second singles where
Nina Barbano shutout Brooke Campbell 6-0, 6-0. The win was Barbano's seventh consecutive victory of the year. Just a freshman, Barbano's overall singles record improved to 15-7 on the season with her win.
In addition to Barbano's singles triumph, Slippery Rock almost gained a second point at third singles, but
Ana Petrovic was narrowly edged by Charlotte Sandy 6-3, 2-6, 10-2.
West Virginia State (12-3) concluded the match with wins at first, fourth, fifth and sixth singles to register the 8-1 win.
Slippery Rock returns home to host No. 12 California (Pa.) in its final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match of the season Sunday at 11 a.m.
