Box Score HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Behind a strong performance in singles competition, the Slippery Rock University women's tennis team defeated Milligan College, 5-4, on Monday in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
The win, Slippery Rock's second in a row, improves SRU's record to 3-4 on the season. Milligan falls to 2-2 on the year with the loss.
The Buffaloes jumped out to a 2-1 lead on The Rock through three doubles matches. While SRU was unable to register wins at No. 1 or No. 2 doubles, the duo of freshman
Michaela Golden and junior
Courtney Gallagher were able to salvage a point with an 8-3 victory over Kaycee Roark and Martha Wells. The win was Golden and Gallagher's second consecutive triumph as a team.
Slippery Rock regrouped to come away with four singles victories in the first, second, fourth and sixth flights to capture the match, 5-4.
Freshman
Carla Corrochano Moracho led the rally with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over Rachel Hodas. Classmate
Nina Barbano followed suit with a 6-1, 7-5 besting of Sarah Rainwater. Barbano's victory evened her record on the year to 5-5.
Sophomores
Stephanie Fortier and
Emily Munson rounded out The Rock's winners on Monday with relatively easy wins. Munson shutout Roark 6-0, 6-0 and Fortier nearly did the same with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles against Abigail Allen.
Milligan was successful at third and fifth singles as Caroline Morelli bested freshman
Ana Petrovic 6-2, 6-0 and Wells downed Gallagher in the closest contest of the day 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).
Slippery Rock will look to push its record to .500 for the first time this season with a win over Rhodes College on Tuesday at 8 a.m.
