Results INDIANA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback at Indiana (Pa.) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play Sunday afternoon.
The loss drops The Rock's record to 5-7 overall and 0-2 in league play. The Crimson Hawks improved to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in PSAC-West matches with the win. IUP was ranked second and Slippery Rock was slotted sixth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional rankings.
Jarka Petercakova and Tanya Timko defeated
Carla Corrochano Moracho and
Nina Barbano, 8-3, at first singles. The Rock went on to lose at No. 2 doubles when Luis Von Agnis and Rachel Wood bested
Courtney Gallagher and
Ana Petrovic, 8-2. IUP took a 3-0 lead on Slippery Rock after Sophia Butland and Alanna McFail downed
Stephanie Fortier and
Kylee Woodman in the third flight, 8-0.
The match of the day came out first singles between Timko and Moracho. Timko took the opening set 6-3, but Moracho regrouped to earn a 6-3 win of her own in the second set. However, Timko managed to take the tiebreaker, 10-7, to get the win and a point for Indiana.
The Crimson Hawks closed out the sweep by taking the final five singles matches.
Petercakova defeated Barbano at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1 while Gonzalez beat Petrovic in the third flight, 6-1, 6-2. The final three singles bouts included wins by Butland against Fortier (6-2, 6-1), Von Agris over Gallagher (6-0, 6-2) and Wood against
Emily Munson (6-1, 6-4).
Slippery Rock will look to snap its three-match losing streak on Monday at Grove City in non-conference play. The match is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
