Rock tennis falls to Mercyhurst, 7-2

In a contest between two of the top teams in the Atlantic Region, the Slippery Rock University women’s tennis team lost to Mercyhurst University, 7-2, Tuesday afternoon at the SRU Tennis Courts.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – In a contest between two of the top teams in the Atlantic Region, the Slippery Rock University women's tennis team lost to Mercyhurst University, 7-2, Tuesday afternoon at the SRU Tennis Courts.
 
Slippery Rock (5-6) played the Lakers close in several of the matchups on Tuesday, but couldn't quite breakthrough for the win.
 
The Rock's freshmen doubles duo of Nina Barbano and Carla Corrochano Moracho continued their solid rookie campaigns with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles over Sarah Baich and Arianna Jeffress. Barbano and Moracho are now 5-5 in dual matches this season.
 
SRU's No. 2 doubles pairing of junior Courtney Gallagher and freshman Stephanie Fortier dropped a narrow 8-5 decision to Annie Baich and Saioa Gomez. The Lakers earned their second point of the match with an 8-1 win by Katelyn Caniford and Adina Spahalic over The Rock's No. 3 team of sophomore Emily Munson and freshman Ana Petrovic.
 
The match of the afternoon occurred at first singles where Gomez won a tightly contested battle with Moracho, 6-3, 3-6, 13-10. Barbano also hung close with Jeffress for the entirety of the competitors' No. 2 doubles match before falling 6-4, 6-3.
 
SRU registered a win at fourth singles when A. Baich, who was already trailing Foriter 3-0, retired.
 
Gallagher lost a close opening set to Spahalic, 6-4, at No. 5 singles before dropping the second set 6-1.
 
Mercyhurst closed the afternoon with convincing wins at third and sixth singles with S. Baich besting Petrovic 6-0, 6-0 and Caniford beating Munson 6-1, 6-0.
 
Slippery Rock looks to return to its winning ways when it travels to Grove City College on March 30 at 3:30 p.m.
