Rock continues streak with win vs. Rhodes

Slippery Rock extended its winning streak to three matches with a victory against Rhodes College Tuesday.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team extended its current winning streak to three matches with a 7-2 victory against Rhodes College on Tuesday in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
 
Slippery Rock sprung out to a 3-0 lead in doubles play and never looked back en route to the win. The win improves Slippery Rock's record to 4-4 on the year. Rhodes College drops to 2-4 on the season with the loss.
 
The Rock gained three points via default victories at No. 3 doubles as well as fifth and sixth singles as Rhodes only had four active players Tuesday.
 
Slippery Rock's first doubles grouping of freshmen Nina Barbano and Carlo Corrochano Moracho started the competition with an 8-3 win over Amelia Mclsaac and Anna Volkov. Barbano and Corrochano are now 4-6 on the season as a team.
 
Junior Courtney Gallagher and sophomore Stephanie Fortier continued produce winning results as a team with an 8-6 victory against Elyse Smith and Morgan Wilkins. The duo is off to a 5-2 record this year, including a perfect 2-0 mark in dual match play.
 
Corrochano and Barbano each won their second straight singles match to ensure the team victory over the Lynx. Corrochano was a 6-0, 6-1 winner against Mclsaac and Barbano bested Volkov 6-4, 6-2. Barbano is now 6-5 on the year with Corrochano right on heels at 5-5.
 
Rhodes College registered wins at third and fourth singles. Wilkins downed freshman Ana Petrovic 6-2, 7-6 (7-1). Fortier took the opening set against Smith, 6-4, but was unable to finish off the win, losing 6-0 and 10-4 in the end.
 
Slippery Rock will look to close out its time in South Carolina on a high note when it plays Millersville on Thursday and Catholic on Friday.
