THE OPENING TIP• This weekend's games are two of six contests that The Rock will play against PSAC-East schools this season; SRU will also play West Chester, Cheyney, Bloomsburg and East Stroudsburg later in the season. All crossover games will count towards the league standings.
• Slippery Rock leads the all-time series against both Mansfield (11-5) and Lock Haven (45-31). SRU defeated Mansfield last season, but has not beat Lock Haven since the 2009-10 season, a span of eight games.
• Two wins would give SRU its first 4-1 start to the year since 2004-05.
LAST TIME OUTJunior guard
Lexi Carpenter had 22 points, seven assists and two rebounds while sophomore guard
Ciara Patterson added 16 points and three steals, but it wasn't quite enough as SRU dropped its PSAC-West opener at Edinboro, 83-66, Nov. 28 at McComb Fieldhouse in Edinboro, Pennsylvania.
EARLY RETURNSJunior guard
Lexi Carpenter has produced two 22-point performances in her first three games in a Rock uniform and is averaging 19.3 points per game (ppg) on the year.
Since the 2002-03 season, 14 years, the only other Slippery Rock players to have scored 20 or more points in two out of the first three games to start a season are former Rock greats
D'Asia Chambers (2012-13, 21/20) and Melissa McKavish (2002-03, 25/24).
An all-around player, Carpenter has also compiled per game averages of 4.7 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals. Additionally, Carpenter, the fifth leading scorer in the PSAC, also ranks fourth in the league in free throw shooting at 87.0 percent (20-for-23). Her 23 free throw attempts are the third most in the PSAC.
BREAKOUT GAMESophomore guard
Ciara Patterson had played well in Slippery Rock's first two games of the year, but the Wright State University transfer shined at Edinboro with season-highs of 16 points, three steals, two assists and 36 minutes played. Patterson was nearly automatic from long range, making four of her seven attempts while shooting 6-for-12 from the field overall.
BOMBS AWAYSlippery Rock has made a PSAC-high 21 3-pointers through three games, or 7.0 3-pointers per game. If SRU can keep up that pace it would easily break the previous Rock single-season record of 6.3 3-pointers made per game that was set in 2001-02.
Patterson has made five 3-pointers followed by senior forward
Megan Hardiman (four), sophomore forward
Mallory Heinle (four), sophomore guard
Krista Pietropola (three), junior guard
Audrey Stapleton (two), senior guard
Erica Aiello (two) and sophomore guard
Shannon Jack (one).
TOTAL TEAM EFFORTIn addition to its starting lineup's scoring abilities, Slippery Rock has also benefitted from a deep bench early. SRU, which plays between four and five reserves a game, has had more bench points than its opponents in each game this season. For the year, Slippery Rock's bench holds a 58-46 edge over its counterparts.
ROCK LEADERSCarpenter and Patterson are Slippery Rock's top two scorers at 19.3 ppg and 10.3 ppg, respectively. Carpenter is also the team-leader in assists per game (4.7) and free throw percentage (.870).
Aiello is third on the team in scoring (9.3 ppg) to go with a Rock-best 2.3 steals per game (spg) and 2.3 apg.
The quartet of Hardiman (6.3 ppg), Stapleton (5.7 ppg), Hienle (4.7) and Pietropola (4.3 ppg) round out The Rock's top scorers.
Hardiman also leads SRU in both field goal percentage (.545 / 6-for-11) and rebounds per game (rpg) at 5.0. Pietropola's 4.3 rpg rank second for SRU.
As was the case for much of last season, senior forward
Sorriyah Ranger is The Rock's top shot blocker with four rejections through two games.
