PSAC Tournament Preview: Rock vs. California

After winning three out of its final four games to end the regular season, Slippery Rock will start its march towards a PSAC Tournament title when it hosts California (Pa.) 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium in first round play.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – After winning three out of its final four games to end the regular season, the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team will start its march towards a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament title when it hosts California (Pa.) 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium in first round play.

PSAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Slippery Rock has won seven PSAC championships (1952, 1953, 1954, 1974, 2005, 2009 and 2013) with its last title coming in 2013. SRU has earned 12 PSAC Tournament bids and is 9-9 in tournament games all-time.

SERIES HISTORY
The Vulcans lead the all-time series against Slippery Rock, 20-17-2, but SRU has won the last three games in the series including a 3-1 victory at SRU earlier in the year.  Slippery Rock and California have played twice in the PSAC Tournament (2005 and 2008) with each team winning once.
 
LAST MEETING
Slippery Rock scored three consecutive goals to earn a 3-1 comeback victory against California Sept. 15, 2015. Senior defender Ryan Lutke and junior forward Matt Sangermano both scored goals in the win with The Rock's third goal coming via a Vulcan own goal.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
Last time out: Sangermano posted a hat trick and assisted on another goal as Slippery Rock cruised to a 7-0 victory against Pitt-Johnstown in The Rock's regular season finale Oct. 31 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
• Slippery Rock's seven goals were tied for the highest goal output by a Rock team since beating Pitt-Bradford 10-1 in 1995.
 
• Sangermano's three goals were the most by a Slippery Rock player since Stephen Donnelly scored three goals against West Chester Nov. 1, 2014.
 
• Slippery Rock enters the conference tournament leading the PSAC in goals scored (36) and ranked second in goals allowed (19). SRU has allowed just seven first-half goals this season. 
 
• Since 2003, SRU is 36-16-9 (.664) in games played at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
• Sangermano's big day against UPJ pushed him to first for The Rock in total points (18) and goals scored (eight). He now ranks sixth in the PSAC in goals and eighth in points.
 
• Lutke and senior forward Peter Boylan are The Rock's two other players with at least 10 points on the season. Lutke has 16 off of seven goals and two assists while Boylan has 15 thanks to four goals and seven assists, the second most of any PSAC athlete.
 
• Slippery Rock's other multi-goal scorers this season include senior forward Mike Ilodigwe (four), junior midfielder Mike Pcholinsky (three), freshman midfielder Justin Minda (two) and junior midfielder Josh Allman (two).
 
• Goalkeepers senior Kyle Hoffer and junior Steven Rerick have almost evenly split goalkeeping duties this season for The Rock. Hoffer has started nine games and is 6-3 with four shutouts, a 0.94 goals against average (GAA), 27 saves and a .750 save percentage. Rerick has started seven contests and is 5-2 with two shutouts, a 1.13 GAA, 39 saves and a .830 save percentage. Hoffer was The Rock's starter in SRU's win against the Vulcans earlier in the year.
 
• Rock players with points in their career against the Vulcans include Lutke (two goals), P. Boylan (two goals), Sangermano (one goal), Ilodigwe (one assist), Allman (one assist) and freshman defender Devin Hoffman (one assist),
 
• 10 Rock players still remain from SRU's 2013 PSAC championship squad. Overall Slippery Rock has 12 players that have combined to play 32 postseason games (PSAC or NCAA). Lutke and senior defender Ryan Boylan have the most postseason appearance at seven games each.
 
• Slippery Rock remained sixth in the latest Atlantic Region rankings released by the NCAA Oct. 28. The top four teams at the conclusion of the PSAC and Mountain East Conference tournaments earn berths into the national tournament.

SCOUTING THE VULCANS
Last time out: California closed its regular season with a 5-1 victory on Senior Day against Lock Haven at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility Oct. 31.
 
• The Vulcans rank in the top-five in the league in scoring this season with 31 goals, while allowing only 22 goals.
 
Jesse Scheirer ranks fourth in the PSAC with 10 goals and is third with 23 points. Eric Campbell added six goals while Nick Cichon and Nathan Delgado both chipped in three goals as well.
 
Lubos Kubik passed out a league-best 10 assists in the regular season.
 
• Lucas Exner started 11 of 13 games played in the regular season and was 6-4-1 with three shutouts, a 1.31 GAA and 66 saves (.805). Backup Aaron Donley started five of six games played and was 3-2 with a 1.41 GAA and 17 saves (.739).
