ERIE, Pa. – Members of the Slippery Rock University women's tennis team recently competed individually at the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Region championships at the Pennbriar Athletic Club in Erie, Pa.

The Rock's
Nina Barbano,
Carla Corrochano,
Stephanie Fortier and
Courtney Gallagher competed in both the singles and doubles tournament.

Gallagher dropped her first singles match to Sophie Butland of Indiana (Pa.) (6-0, 6-3), but quickly regrouped to win her first two contests in the consolation bracket against Charleston's Nicole Fahringer (8-1) and West Liberty's Kate Pinchuk (8-4) before an 8-1 loss to UC's Alize Uyttenhove ended her tournament.

The trio of Barbano, Corrochano and Fortier all won their respective opening-round matches against Edinboro's Katie Allen (6-1, 6-0), Mercyhurst's Jessica Gorcica (6-0, 6-0) and West Liberty's Raquel Cabero (6-3, 6-3). However, all three were eliminated with losses in the second round.

The Rock was represented in the doubles tournament by the pairings of Barbano and Corrochano as well as Gallagher and Fortier.

Barbano and Corrochano opened the tournament with an 8-6 first round win over Mercyhurst's Katelyn Caniford and Adina Spahalic before dropping their second round contest to California's Lena Dimmer and Mariela Sarinana, 8-5.

After losing 8-3 to the Crimson Hawks' Tanya Timko and Luis Von Agris, Gallagher and Fortier rebounded to make a run all the way to the finals of the consolation bracket with consecutive wins against Pinchuk and Alaina Pauley of West Liberty (8-2), Uyttenhove and Courtney Pierron of Charleston (8-2) and versus Ally Rees and Alanna McFail (8-1).

However, Gallagher and Fortier had their streak broken when Indiana's Butland and Raquel Gonzalez outlasted them for an 8-5 victory.

Slippery Rock competes in its first team match of the season when it hosts West Liberty in a regional battle Sunday at noon.
