Cain earns All-America finish at nationals

Julia Cain placed eighth in the pole vault to earn her second consecutive All-America honor to lead the SRU effort on day one at the National Championships.

placed eighth and earned All-America honors Thursday at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championships at Grand Valley State University.
 
Cain, who also placed eighth to earn All-America honors at the national meet last spring, cleared 3.80 meters to close her career as a two-time All-American.
 
She passed on the opening height of 3.60 meters and then cleared 3.70 meters and 3.80 meters on her first attempts before missing all three tries at 3.90 meters.
 
Cain was joined in the pole vault Thursday at the national meet by sophomore Kaitlyn Clark, who cleared 3.70 meters to place 14th in her second appearance at a National Championship.
 
The pair of pole vaulters are two of the three Slippery Rock women competing at the national meet. Sam Taylor will round out The Rock women's performances when she competes in the javelin Saturday at 2 p.m.
 
The Slippery Rock men's team was represented by Morgan Elliott Thursday in the 1,500-meter run. Elliott placed 10th in his heat and 20th overall in a time of 4:00.90.
 
The men's team will also be represented by David Reinhardt, who will compete in the javelin Saturday at 11 a.m.
 
Cain finishes her outstanding Slippery Rock career as a two-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference champion in the pole vault and a two-time All-American. She cleared a personal best of 4.05 meters this year, the third best vault in program history behind marks of 4.10 meters and 4.06 meters by former All-American Jen Hansen.
 
Elliott finishes his four-year career as the school record holder in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:50.38 set earlier this year. He earned All-Conference honors in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field in his senior season and also earned All-Region honors in cross country and outdoor track and field.
 
No Slippery Rock athletes will compete Friday on the second day of the national meet.
