Morgan Pettit moved up to third on the Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse single-season goal-scoring ledger and fourth on the all-time career goal-scoring list Wednesday in The Rock's 15-6 loss at No. 10 Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action.
Pettit tallied four goals to bring her career-high single-season tally to 55 goals, passing Amy Halls' 51 for third on the all-time list at SRU. Her scores increased her career goal total to 110, passing Regina Lynch's 107 for fourth on the all-time list.
Pettit enters the final game of her career Saturday at No. 7 Lock Haven needing two goals to tie Amy Halls for second in single-season goals with 57 and the same number to tie April Ennis for third in career goals with 112.
Slippery Rock struggled out of the gates Wednesday as Mercyhurst opened the game with four quick goals in less than six minutes and jumped out to a 7-1 lead late in the first half. The Rock responded with a 3-1 run over the final seven minutes of the first half to send it to halftime with the Lakers on top 8-4.
The teams traded goals to open the second half before Mercyhurst went on a 5-0 run to put the game away, maintaining their tie atop the PSAC standings in the process. The Lakers improved to 14-2 overall and 10-1 in league play with the win, while Slippery Rock drops to 6-10 overall and 3-8 in PSAC games.
Pettit was joined in the scoring department by
Lydia Heishman and
Paige Costantino, who each tallied one goal.
Sarah Morris capped the top SRU performances with five draw controls and three ground balls.
Hannah Houde took the loss in goal after allowing eight goals in the first half and recording four saves.
Jordan Wagner played the final 30 minutes and allowed seven goals and made two saves.
Mercyhurst was led by five goals from Taylor Ventre and also got two goals and two assists from Carly Zimmerman and one goal and three assists from Becca Himes. Rebecca Muscella earned the win with six saves in goal.
Mercyhurst finished the game with advantages of 31-19 in shots and 19-15 in ground balls. Both teams were credited with 11 draw controls.
Slippery Rock will close its 2014 season Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at No. 7 Lock Haven, which will be the sixth game against a nationally ranked opponent this season.
