Janine Powis ran the fastest 800-meter time in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference so far this season to lead Slippery Rock at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic Sunday.
Powis entered the weekend with the best time in the conference and improved on her mark with a time of 2:13.21 to place eighth overall in a field of 80 runners. She was the top Division II finisher in an event that was dominated by Division I runners.
Her time is also an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and currently ranks as the 21st best time in the nation among all Division II runners.
A total of 12 runners from the PSAC ran season-best times in the women's 800-meter run at Bucknell Sunday.
Creanna Martin was one of those 12, reaching the PSAC qualifying standard with a time of 2:20.95, currently the 13th best time in the league.
The men's team was led Sunday by
Tyler Melius, who posted the eighth best time in the PSAC this season in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.49.
Only 10 men in the PSAC have reached the conference qualifying standard so far this season in the 800-meter run and nine of those 10 ran season-best times Sunday at Bucknell.
The 800-meter runners were the only SRU athletes to compete Sunday. The entire team will be back in action Thursday when The Rock hosts the SRU Open at the Bill Lennox Track. Field events begin at noon and track events begin at 2:30 p.m.
