Rock beats Gannon 18-7 for first series win

Slippery Rock earned its first PSAC win of the season and first ever win over Gannon with a convincing 18-7 victory Tuesday night.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team earned its first ever win over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Gannon in convincing fashion Tuesday night with an 18-7 victory at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
Gannon entered the game with a 7-0 advantage in the all-time series between the two teams but scored just two goals in the opening half as The Rock ran away from their guests.
 
The win snaps a four-game losing skid for Slippery Rock that included three one-goal losses and improves the team to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in PSAC games. Gannon evens out at 5-5 overall with the loss and drops to 2-3 in league action.
 
Tuesday night's game was the cap on a perfect day for Slippery Rock athletics as The Rock won all five home games in all sports Tuesday with baseball and softball both sweeping Clarion in doubleheaders.
 
It was all Slippery Rock from the start as the hosts scored the first seven goals and never looked back. The Rock led 12-2 at halftime and had the game in a running clock situation for most of the second half as Gannon would get no closer than a 9-goal deficit and would trail by as many as 14 goals in the final period.
 
Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages in every statistical category, including 37-21 in shots, 22-18 in ground balls and 18-9 in draw controls. Gannon was whistled for 30 fouls and was 9-of-15 in clear attempts. SRU was called for 19 infractions and was 12-of-18 on the clear.
 
A total of seven Slippery Rock players scored more than one goal and eight Rock players tallied multiple points in the game. Paige Costantino and Jess Verbic led the way with three goals and one assist each, while Morgan Pettit also scored four points on two goals and two assists.
 
Katie Cook scored a hat trick, Kaytlin Callaghan scored two goals and added an assist and Anna-Marie Warrington and Erin Wilcox each tallied two goals as well. The final points on the night came from Caitlynn Palladino with one goal and one assist off the bench.
 
Wilcox added a game-high seven draw controls and Callaghan picked up a team-high three ground balls.
 
Jordan Wagner made her second start of the year and was fantastic in goal, stopping eight shots to move to 2-1 on the year. She also caused two turnovers, recorded two ground balls and didn't turn the ball over once on the clear.
 
Gannon was led by four points from Kimberly Neagle with two goals and two assists and one goal and two assists each from Tessa Mitchell and Christie Valentine.
 
The Golden Knights struggled to find a balance on defense and relied on three goalies in the game. Margaret Maslyn was credited with the loss after allowing 11 goals and recording six saves. Carly Shaw allowed four goals and made one save and Chrissy Yoest allowed three goals and made three saves.
 
Tuesday marked the first in a span of three straight home games for Slippery Rock, which will welcome a pair of nationally ranked opponents for its next matches. The first of those games is Saturday when No. 15 Bloomsburg visits for a 1 p.m. match.
