SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season with a dominant 4-0 shutout at Shepherd University Sunday in non-conference action.
The Rock (1-0-1) recorded its second consecutive shutout to start the year and has now gone unbeaten in 19 of the program's last 23 games. Shepherd dropped to 0-2-0 with the loss.
Slippery Rock got goals from four different players with
Zach Hall and
Stephen Donnelly leading the way with a goal and an assist each.
Stephen McConahy and
Peter Boylan added a goal apiece and
Declan Brennan chipped in an assist to cap the scorers.
The Rock finished the game with advantages of 18-11 in total shots, 8-2 in shots on goal and 4-2 in corner kick attempts.
Joe Agerskow recorded his second straight shutout of the year in goal for SRU after making two saves.
David Leonard took the loss in goal for Shepherd after allowing all four goals and recording four saves.
Slippery Rock wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as Hall tallied the opening goal in just the second minute to set the tone.
McConahy added to the lead when he converted off an assist from Brennan in the 32nd minute to give The Rock a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.
Donnelly pushed the lead out to 3-0 in the 54th minute off an assist from Hall and Boylan capped the scoring in the 57th minute when he converted an assist from Donnelly.
Sunday's game was the second of three non-conference road games Slippery Rock will play to open the season. The Rock travels to Urbana University Sept. 13 for a 4 p.m. match before opening the home portion of their season Sept. 17 at 1:30 p.m. against West Virginia Wesleyan.
