PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team opened its 2013 season Thursday afternoon with a scoreless double overtime tie at Lake Erie College in non-conference action.
The game served as the season opener for both teams and was close throughout, with each team registering 18 total shots in the game and neither team establishing an edge.
The end result is familiar for Slippery Rock after playing to six double overtime ties last season, the most in a single year in program history.
The Rock opened the game with a strong push, recording three shots and earning two corner kicks in the first 15 minutes, but Lake Erie evened the match as time went on.
Slippery Rock started nine returning players with the only new additions to the starting lineup coming from
Declan Brennan and
DJ Kouyate. A total of 18 Rock players saw action in the opener.
While neither team managed an advantage in total shots, Slippery Rock posted an 8-4 edge in shots on goal and a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper
Joe Agerskow earned his first shutout in a Slippery Rock uniform by stopping all four shots on goal from the Storm.
His counterpart, Sam Etherton, recorded eight saves for Lake Erie to earn the shutout.
Slippery Rock was led offensively by
Zach Hall with two shots on goal.
Stephen Donnelly and Brennan each tallied a game-high four total shots.
The meeting was just the second all-time between The Rock and Lake Erie, with SRU earning a 3-0 win last season in the first meeting between the two teams.
Thursday's game was the first of three that Slippery Rock will play on the road to open the 2013 season. The Rock will travel to Shephard University Sunday for a 2 p.m. game before visiting Urbana University Sept. 13 for a 4 p.m. match.
